They need to be slip-proof, waterproof, black and durable. Supportive would be nice too. I got some "Rugged Outdoor", they weren't really waterproof (or even near it), and started falling apart in 2-3 months.
I've heard nothing but good reports from several people about Red Wings but I've never actually owned a pair. I'm currently wearing a pair of Wolverine work boots. I just wear them for everyday wear and I really like them. They're pretty comfortable when I'm on my feet for long periods. These aren't steel toed, so I can't comment on how those feel. I highly recommend Hi-Tec boots, but they make hiking boots only. My first pair lasted 15 years, swear to god. They eventually just dry rotted and came apart but the tread was still in great shape. I wore those fuckers religiously, too. I bought another pair a few years ago. If I wiped the crud off them you'd swear they were right outta the box. Do not, I repeat...DO NOT...buy any shoe or boot carried at Wally World. You'll curse the day.
Yup red wings , steep price great boot will last for years . Wolverine pretty good too. I too have a six year old pair of red wings , the industial loggers . They have like a three inch heel . Hell took me a month to break em in .
Georgia workboot, steeltoe loggers are a long held favorite for me, good cushioning and they take a solid beating for a good 2 years before they need resole-ing(?) (Forklift run overs, industrial solvents, hydraulic fluids, diesel, kerosine, bleach etc.) Good freaking luck finding a Cobbler, still one of those "to do" list skils I want to obtain.
I like snap on ones they went on sale once and i bought 3 pairs...im still using the first pair they last long
Well, I work in a grocery store, but I walk to work; and live in Pittsburgh, which has the highest amount of precipitation of any continental US city. (Seattle has a horrid rainy season, but Pittsburgh actually rains more on average per year) They just need to be slip-proof and waterproof for work/travel; but durability is a must because I can't be buying them all the time. If they are good for hiking, that would be awesome, cause I do love the nearby nature trails -- but if not, sneakers will do me fine.
If I was working the streets, I would choose these, For work I wear these when I am on site, yeah I know, boring. They do not look great with a dress but I pass code. They are Timberlands.
I have red wings steel toes. They're very durable, and I Have waterproof ones. I've only really exposed them to serious water a few days, but when I did, it was a torrential downpour, for days on end, working from 7 to 10 in the mud, digging drainage ditches and such. Even through my trash bag, everything else I had on was soaked, but my feet where fine. Red wing wicking socks are a must, IMO. Never wear my boots without them. They're expensive but worth it. My one complaint is width. I special-ordered wide ones a size too big, and still, though my toe fills a little less than half the steel cup, the edge irritates and pinches my little toe. I think if i didn't get steeltoes, they would have broken in fine for my foot, but didn't want to later want steel and not have it. Also, the soles have good grip by virtue of softness, but also might wear a tad fast. Mine almost need resoling, and have only had a summer of hard wear. Stepping on hot steel messes em up fast, but they're very well insulated. I pretty much melted one sole walking in hot coals, and hardly felt warm. *edit* having read your post, I think they might be overkill. But snobs will like your taste. For walking, stay away from steel toes.... unless you have a terrifying neighborhood.
Anybody got any experience with good tropical or jungle boots? I've had the Military issue boots of the Viet Nam era and can't say I'm impressed with them for comfort. Comfort is critical in rouch terrain. Any suggestions?
Doc Martins are pretty comfortable, but they don't last as long as Red wings. I started wearing my Docs at work because they are more comfortable then the red wings, but they're falling apart after two years.
Yeah I have had the same problem with every steel toe boot from them ( at least three pairs ) Pinching my little toe too. Not so much new , but once they break in yeah , for sure . There sizing is so damn different and every time they size my foot on the machine they always pinch my toes . My last pair were slip on type welders boot and I love them , never going back to laces . And I find there thicker soles hold up much better in the long run , however not as comfortable . my industrial loggers are going on six years now and the sole is still fine . However I ave some of there soles last less than a year . I'm hard on boots and they are worth having them resoled . I always keep em oiled up too , it makes em last as well . And I agree , they are overkill for a grocery store . I would go with the industrial tennis shoe there for comfort , light weight and can come with or without steel toe . Steel toes suck !
Hello, if you stick knee deep in cow poo while working this colour is exactly what your boots have to be . Regards Gyro
