In a 2-1 split, the US 9th Circuit Appeals Court struck down prop 8. Proposition 8 was California's ban on same sex marriage. This doesn't mean that gays can marry, and it doesn't apply to other states.

Good to see, but I really would prefer to see gay marriage be approved by voters instead of by a handful of judges. Still such a backwards country.

I don't understand what the issue is in the States. Do people honestly believe that same-sex marriage somehow degrades the bond of marriage between opposite-sex couples? If not, why do they care what the genders of two people in love are? Is this a religious issue? I'm from Canada, and we are proud of our support of homosexuals.

It's a "ZOMG it will hurt the kids and corrupt family values" issue. You know what hurt American society? Vietnam did. Destroyed millions and millions of families. The losses of life directly from the war weren't that much, but the mental losses were devastating.

I mean, I guess this is cool. I got really excited when I first started reading this online earlier today but than I got to the part where it said they still can't get married. *sighs*
Maybe someday people will lighten up and accept everyone...

Because the govt is involved that's why.

I feel marriage should be something private how ever you want to do it. The govt shouldn't be deciding who gets what pension entitlement.. That's for the couple to decide..

And actually American Californians support gay marriage, it's actually the Latino, Asian and other cultures which overwhelmingly do not support gay marriage and tipped the vote.

So the numbers aren't exactly as they appear..

What I can say is when there is federal gay marriage, you're going to see an EXplosion of fake weddings for money in order to use it as a citizenship loophole. The price will be around $100k paid to an American male to file the paper work and setup the fake marriage. If I was younger heck I might consider it. Then there's all the pension payouts to these spouses, class action lawsuits for back pay, etc..

There'd be a huge mess logotically to say the least.

Edit: I just hope they figure all this out without anyone getting hurt. Really, in retrospect, that's the only thing I care about in this situation.

I'm glad the courts took that action, because the government has no authority to tell someone who they can or cannot marry. If it's over the insurance issue (as I have heard), I fail to see the difference between a man husband and a woman husband. Or a woman wife and a man wife. Like WTF? It's between the couple, and no one else.

Not exactly. You can have a civil marriage without the preacher. You have a judge instead.

    True.

    As clear as mud.

    Here. Have some matches.

Yes, this is why couples get married, to legally cement their life bond and make sure the government enforces said contract, as that is one of the most basic things even a hardcore Libertarian government would do.

You literally just said only white people are Americans and their culture isn't "American"

It's not like straight people would never do this, and would never abuse it to a far greater extent given the fact they make up 90 to 095% of the population. You don't really understand how pensions or marriage work do you? Yes, I'm going to stay married to someone for 37 years until they retire and die so I can finally live the high life off their monthly retirement pension at the ripe age of 72.

No, they wouldn't. Here, lemme tell you guys why despite this not happening in any of the states of countries that allow gay marriage, how gay marriage will cause some vague logistics nightmare.

And marriage is not a religious institution, that's the biggest load of crock fed out by the religious right. Marriage pre dates by far any existing religion, and it's always been above all a civil matter. The Romans/Greeks had legal rights attached to marriage, especially after the Agusustan reforms, while through most of medeival history marriage at higher levels was about cementing family or state political and economic bonds.(well, and love, but no one cares about the history of plebians)

Unfortunately, the social conservatives won't go away that easily.
