A few years ago, I was trying to learn to grow spirulina algae at home. I tried all sorts of growth formulae, all manner of growing tanks, and had NO luck whatsoever. Finally, I gave up and started eating the starter spi myself. No need for it to go to waste, after all. It was tasty.

But I remember that I got some powdered on my hands, and on a whim I brushed it into my goldfishie tank. Fish love that stuff, right? The fish died shortly after, it got ich and died before I could treat it, so I packed up the tank and moved on. This was a long time ago.

Well, a few weeks ago I sterilized the tank and started it up again, this one full of neons and shrimp. I noticed last week that there were suddenly 2 colors of algae growing, with the blue-green rapidly overtaking the more normal-looking olive green. The blue algae is going NUTS in there, and the fish couldn't be happier. I think some of the spi made it through in the filter, or something.

I pulled a scraping off of the wall, going to take it to the campus bio department to be certain, but after giving up and forgetting it I think I've gotten a spi culture going. Go, fishies!

Now, how do I get it to grow somewhere where I'm not afraid to nibble on it afterwards? I don't want a bite of fish poo, after all.
