I like you stink! I wanted to give the opportunity to take a false statement back. False things tend to stick in one's mind long after they've been said. It leaves an impression that people aren't interested in the truth or are too slow to recognize it.
Truth should always be questioned. Perhaps a better explanation in lieu of a retraction as far as DG... it strikes me as very likely that he has grasped the concept of questioning those who believe that age is an automatic entitlement to respect but he has yet to confront the fine art of questioning himself. I believe that while wisdom and age have a good degree of correlation I don't think the relation is absolute. It boils down to what one has experienced in the years that one has... and making a statement as our Gatsby friend did reflects that he may need to go through life's charming little wringer a few times- because people with some tread wear- regardless of age- tend not to make such blanket conclusions. Now I have met a very few very young people who show wisdom light years beyond folks my age- but they are few and far between- and the wisdom that belies ones age will almost certainly come from having successfully dealt with extraordinary circumstances and learned a thing or two from the experience. one of the more impressive people I've ever met happens to be a 21 year old recovering addict but examples like that are few and far between. One of the dumbest is a former co-worker, about my age and his example is far more common unfortunately. Life to far too many is about the material goods and refining only the skills needed to address that end of existence. We pass through life and exit it at some point- the biology and all its material attachments fall away and are no longer a part of the deal- assuming there's some aspect of "spiritual" continuity, what does life really mean and what is it that we're supposed to gather? I hope that I have paddled a decent distance from the buoys marking the limits of the "kiddy pool" of thought...
Imo, it would depend on what the person values. Why do some people value the nature of the universe and consciousness and how to define morality and others value sports, fame or possessions? A friend asked me to read a book that was fascinating to him; it was a book about alchemy... to me it was totally boring, I couldn't read more than three pages without my mind wandering. Where do values come from?
For me it starts with logic, reason, evidence. If your priorities don't start there I have nothing for you. Also you're stupid.
I have lots of deep thoughts about the mysteries of the universe and such like... then again, I have way too much time to think.
If someone asks me a question requiring a 'deep' response, I will likely shrug it off and move on with the conversation. I often don't like to talk about my thoughts, and when I do they come out seemingly 'random' and incoherent, and thus I may come across as being either stupid or ignorant. I ponder things, I solve puzzles, I question things, etc. but it seems like nonsense to anyone that doesn't understand the way my mind works anyway. Like I said, it's partially a matter of articulation, MayQueen420 pretty much summed it up. I do not dismiss peoples' cognitive abilities based on their opinion of the origin of life. Besides, if they pondered the question and they find contentment in the answer of 'Adam and Eve', then I can't be arrogant enough to insist that just because a different answer than my own arose, they did not put any thought into it. Even Average Joe is a lot more complex than he may seem.
I am afraid that I am very stupid then... logic is really overrated. If a person relies only on logic, reason and evidence and has no imagination then I am afraid that I find them very boring.
Except they'll likely endanger their kids with contagious stupidity. There's nothing arrogant about insisting on the facts.
I wouldn't necessarily say that a different set of priorities constitutes stupidity. Genius manifests in different forms. Artistic brilliance need not be dependent on the types of evidence and analysis that you value. From my own experience and track record of dumb mistakes, an exaggerated sense of ones own sagacity can be a very dangerous trap to set for oneself.
I imagine so many amazing possibilities for the future. I'm so optimistic about things getting exponentially better if we embrace the right things and turn that optimism into a self fulfilling prophecy. It's all base on reason, logic and evidence. What kind of imagination do you think is good?
Some of the most brilliant people I know are theists. Seems that it's not ignorance you hate, just thoughts that do not match your own.
Let's talk about the truth. Is it possible both theists and their counterparts are right about their claims of the nature of the universe?
No I do not. Don't know much about it, library book classifications.. They're just books, why do you need to classify them? Just pick the damn book up and read it. If it does indeed "exist", then it is a very useless existence. How can something that desribes say a series of books exist? It isn't the book itself which is the existing factor. Something that only describes the existing item only describes it. The DDS is not something I can see and hold, it only controls what I can see and hold.
nothing is absolute, fact translates to 'generally accepted notion' in my mind. Both theories are similar in that neither can provide an absolute explaination for the origin of matter or life.
There are absolutely absolutes. You kidding me? You're trying so hard to wiggle away from that question lol.
