I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It is the rare sequel that is better than the original. Having just watched the 2009 Sherlock Holmes this week, my expectations may have been lessened but this movie is much better.

It still has all the absurdly modern notions and deviates from some of the 19th century style of Conan Doyle, but it has all the expected action, explosions and near misses as well as the captivating relationship between Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law).

Dr. Watson is marrying his fiancé Mary (Kelly Reilly), which in the previous movie was a source of friction with Holmes, who was losing his best buddy to a woman. (There is an undertone that these guys' relationship is closer than they will admit to themselves).

Needless to say, we can't have Mr. & Mrs Watson going off to Brighton on their honeymoon, leaving Holmes to pull-off the rest of the movie alone.

While I shan't go into all the details of the story, this is a conflict between Holmes and Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). The movie actually opens with Watson typing the exploits of Holmes in 1891, amidst terrorist bombings in Europe that threaten to bring about a world war of all nations. Everyone blames the anarchists, but Holmes suspects it is the nefarious Prof. Moriarty.

The intrigues start with Holmes tailing his female nemesis Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) who is working for Moriarty.

Holmes foils yet another of Moriarty's plans, causing the professor's ire being directed at Him and the Watsons. Due to the involvement of so many nations in Moriarty's plots, Holmes enlists the help of his brother, Mycroft (Stephen Fry) who is in the Foreign Office.

In the unraveling of Moriarty's plot, Holmes becomes involved with a Gypsy fortune teller, Madam Simza (Noomi Rapace) and they become allies in the search for her brother who plays a major role in the Professor's plans. (Sounds a bit like James Bond).

Well, as the story progresses, we see things blow up, canons felling trees, ppl getting poisoned, shot by a sniper and a hand-to-hand struggle between Holmes and Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. I really enjoyed this movie - will be seeing it again

It is more a series of events than a real plot. My friends and me had the common feeling that me film was just going nowhere. The store was rather a line than a real emotion roller coaster.
