I was "invited" to a wedding. Strong feelings against marriage and family.

    lol.

Yeah, marriage changes people and makes them unbearable IMO. There`s this chick at work who was all open relationships, and feminism, and women shouldn`t adhere to expectations of men, blahzay blah.

Now, she`s got this boyfriend. Total codependent relationship. She goes marriage-and-kids-happy and begins to nag him about marrying her all the time; he doesn`t want to. Suddenly, she`s on a diet, and hitting the gym, and buying clothes, and hanging out with the vacuous princesses she once vowed to hate. I caught the boyfriend cheating on her once too.

And, of course, she doesn`t hang out with me anymore. In the words of Bill Maher, "I am kryptonite to married couples. I bring news of freedom."

    -----------
And, the most hypocritical thing of all about this wedding thing, is that they present it as I`m the one who`s being "selfish" for not going. It`s like, do what I want, and come give me social verification, or you`re being selfish.

Stop being so selfish! That's probably why no one in your family likes you. Stop think about just yourself, suck it up and go. Do you want to grow old alone and lonely?

I have nothing against other people getting married. Yes, I skipped weddings but not out of principle. More out of boredom, disinterest and saw no point in taking the effort :p Mostly were of cousins/nieces or youth friends. I didn't go cause I couldn't care less. Although I have nothing against them I don't have a strong relationship with them (otherwise I probably made the effort just for them).

The update is, I didn`t go. And, I still have a family. I think that`s due not only to their tolerance, but to the work I`ve been putting into communicating my boundaries for years now. I think it`s finally paying off --- people are starting to respect me more.

I know you already missed it, but I shall share my feelings on weddings anyhow...

If there is an open bar, go get drunk, hit on people, and pray you aren't related.

If there is no bar...good god what were they thinking? People don't go to weddings to see two people exchange vows, they go to get drunk and hit on people.

Glad to hear everything worked out with your family :)

the last wedding i went to had no alcohol whatsoever, but then the couple met in rehab so i suppose that was probably a sound decision.

also, who is there to hit on at a wedding? i don't think i've ever seen anybody but myself show up at a wedding without a date to cling to all night.

You could always just GO to the wedding, and then say you puked in the bathroom and you feel like shit all of a sudden... cause you must have got food poisoning from of some sandwich you ate earlier, and dash home "sick"

food poisoning usually happens unexpectedly, so it's out of your hands, and nobody will be mad at you for leaving, they will probably feel bad for you and hope you get better. Of course you will have to pretend to look sick if you can do that.

He's complaining that his family is a pain on the ass, and this is your advice?

He, like me gets a lot of that kind of talk from family and extended family who are just about in every case cranky, miserable, bitchy...every family function stupid power struggle nonsense that isnt going to make a difference becuase they find something else to bitch about anyway. And when it comes to money most of them will just try suck you dry.

If it was just my family, i'd just say its my family, but its not, its everywhere, every ones family, everyones family I've ever seen.

Just becuase someone has the magic ability to say out loud they are happy, doesnt mean its remotely close to the truth

Putting up with this crap is how you end up miserable and alone. I'll spend my retirement cruising the south pacific or getting wasted in Amsterdam thank you very much

I think you should still go:) Yeah i have relatives who i wish i didn't see at things like this and weddings always make me jelly (i know it shouldn't but they do!), it seems like the bride really wants you to go and what the bride wants the bride usually should have...you must mean a lot to her and she wants everyone she loves to be apart of her big day:) Go and look like a billionaire...make them all want to be you :) good luck
