at the beginning of the year, for the first time ever, i experienced a incubus dream...and it continued consecutively for about 4 days. it really scared me to the point that i was afraid to fall asleep. i was just wondering whether anyone knew why these dreams develop?
Medical science attributes it to sleep paralysis. The paralysis is caused by the release of hormones during REM dream state that paralyzes the body and keeps it from acting out the contents of the dream. Normally the hormones dissipate before the dream ends and the dreamer awakens, but in some rare cases the hormones are still suppressing the body's motor functions when the sleeper has awakened and finds herself(or himself for a succubus) paralyzed. The waking brain tries to find a rational explanation for this paralysis so it invents the evil presence or entity.
Thats crazy how some people experience that. I experience something quite opposite on a daily basis. I have REM sleep behavior disorder, meaning while as you said hormones are released in your brain during REM sleep in an effort to protect yourself from yourself while your sleeping so you cant act out your dreams. My body however does not produce that natural paralysis or at least not enough of it so I have had countless nights of waking up standing up, yelling at the top of my lungs, running down there stairs, kicking holes in the wall. Haha crazy shit. The worst was when I woke up in the basement of my parents old house. Pretty fucking scary haha. Most people who sleep walk do so in a much more peaceful manner, during stages 1-4 of sleep which is much more common amongst average people. But I run around doing all kinds of crazy reckless shit in my sleep haha I think its going to be the death of me.
yes, i have realized that it only occurs when i sleep on my back. i wish there was an explanation as to why it only occurs when someone's sleeps on their back. it's such a trip though, why must the dreams be so frightening? why do we mentally picture demons, or negative images in general when this occurs? the mind is such a mysterious thing. one minute we may think we understand, and a second later, everything is just as enigmatic as before.
that is such a trip! does it happen often, every night, or just once in a while. i have never experienced any sort of sleep walking, although i sometimes do find that i wake myself up because i hear myself scream. i never know if i actually screamed though, or if it was just part of my dream.
