KIDS BOOK from the 90s/LATE 80S??? HELP!!

random i know, but me and my ladies anniversary is coming up and id really like to get this for her as a surprise. it was the only story her dad read to her as a child and her fondest memory of him. she doesn't remember the title so its been hard tracking this down.

BASICALLY - the story has something to do with a "child," might not be human, who is going back to school. One of the key points is this kid uses the new school supplies they have for the coming year before they start and the mom has to tear the used pages out...thats pretty much all i got.

ask her dad what the name of the book is. if he doesn't know, then get as much info from him as possible, and then ask a librarian
