    Hello there, fellow travelers!

Okay, so I'm going to NYC some time in July. This will be the first time I ever stepped on the land of the USA. I'm planning to stay there at least for two weeks, maybe three. After going through hotels prices, I'm not sure I can afford staying in them all the time, even the cheapest ones. So, I've got several questions, to whoever can answer and advise me:

    - The best places to stay for the cheapest price while on this trip? Hostels? Something else?
    - Since I can't afford staying in a hotel, I was thinking of doing some on-the-road style of traveling: maybe a little hitchhiking, then some buses, or whatever comes my way and visit places, while sleeping on the road and cleaning up in public rest rooms. Has anybody done this, and to what extent is this doable? Any advise?
    - I'm landing in JFK, but that doesn't mean I'll stay in NYC only. If I'll go for that on-the-road thing, any tips on WHERE to go and what to see, keeping in mind tight budget and the will to sleep anywhere?

Please feel free to advise anything that comes to mind what I can do when I come to NYC. Any interesting ideas are welcome, and I love the challenge. I don't have any particular goal in NYC, just to spend time and experience life!

    Thanks!! :)

I wish I could answer your other questions but I haven't spend enough time in the New York area to really have an advice to offer. I will say that if you are staying for two weeks, you will leave feeling as if you still didn't see enough of what the city has to offer. Upstate New York is absolutely beautiful, and I'm sure the beaches of Long Island are too (public transportation to Long Island is easy to come by), but you could easily spend several weeks in the city and have no reason to leave at all.

Public transportation is easily available in most of the northern East Coast. You may need to hitch in upstate NY and any of the more rural areas to get around, but parts of new york can be so desolate that I'm not sure I would recommend it.

where are you coming from? how long do you plan to stay? what are you looking for? experience life is too vague

check out couchsurfing.org. you can stay with people for free.

you need to know what the fuck you are doing. parts of nyc are safe, others, you can be killed. the bad neighborhoods and the good neighborhoods are right next to each other.

I doubt that nyc is a good place for hitching.

if you come into nyc and don't know where you will stay or what you will do, and look broke, they will grill the hell out of you, and maybe turn you back.

they may suspect that you are trying to immigrate illegally.

figure shit out ahead of time
