I have finally started my dready journey after a year or so waiting for my hair to grow to the length i wanted to start at. I used the backcomb method with no wax. I only have a few questions to start because i like how they turned out. My head has been alot more itchy then normal with dome dandruff because of all of the itching i have done. I was told this is common for young dreads but how long untill some of the itchyness goes away? i have checked out some products but really havent had a good desiding factor on what to choose. Any advice would be amazing. Peace and Love.
Sorry if you had a bad hair day today!! You are great in my way everyday! The sun still came out today! think of tomorrow and a better way! from Nanette T.
i used dr. bronners for a while but found that i wasn't a fan. i stand by baking soda with tea tree oil though, always leaves my scalp feeling good.

Well so far everything is going well, i am curious about possibly oils or something else for washing. I have bought dr bronners, as much as it has made my itching go away my scalp seems to be producing more flakes then it was before. Ive never had dandruff like this before. Any suggestion would be very much appreciated. Peace and Love.
Alright man, your dreads look pretty much the exact same as mine when I started almost 3 years ago (Holy fuck I can't believe I'm finally the one giving advice). Anyway, the itchiness is normal at first. Your head is just getting used to everything, I know that sounds simple... But that's because it really is. Make your own dreadwash, buying stuff is useless. Trust me, I've bought every "earth friendly residue free hippie loving" shit in a bottle and none of them do anything special. I use a mixture of baking soda and tea... Yes tea, the drink. It makes it smell awesome. I wash my hair every other day and they never stink and my head never itches. Also, all of those dreads might just fall out, but they'll stay relatively sectioned. When/If this happens don't do anything, it's normal and they'll form on their own even better than the first time. That's pretty much it. Dreads take no effort if you wash them regularly. That's the beauty of this natural shit.
Belive it or not; When you are done in the shower wash your hair in cold water. As cold as you can bear for as long as you can. (like 2-3 mins) Diluted apple cider vinegar can help as well, but that is conditioning and you dont want that early in the dreading process.
The initial itchiness (mine was a combo of weaning my scalp off of regular shampoo and daily washes + the backcombing) went away for me after about a month or so. And it gets better every day. Aloe and tea tree oil were things I found that helped ease the itchiness. As far as products, I have always been a diluted Bronner's girl. **edit** I see you've found the Bronner's to be drying. What were you using before? You must remember that most shampoos have conditioning elements to them and chemicals like SLS. Bronner's doesn't have that shit so you scalp needs to start learning how to produce and balance its oils again. Also, once your locks are mature enough (I'd say around 10 mos. or more) you can strt using conditioner on your scalp, and that'll help with the dryness.
Right on, Well ive been using t/gel a mostly which helps alot. Should i try adding some essential oils to dr. bronners or try a baking soda and essentials. Im still fairly new to the locking process so i was just wanting to know from everybody what kind of mixture to use on my hair. Ive have switched back to the t/gel just alittle and the and the hairs at the root seem to loosen up more then then using the bronners so i would imagine it has some kind of conditioner in it. Im just hearing alot of the diffrent ways to wash and nuture my scalp.
@Bolero - That sounds amazing. What KIND of tea do you go with? I did my first baking soda wash last night and adding tea sounds like a great idea. @Siggs - I have no experience, but I can tell you I washed with baking soda/water mix last night and my scalp and hair felt amazing and clean. I could be wrong but I've read it strips your hair of residues products leave behind. Btw, awesome dreads man.
t-gel is strong stuff!! i use generic, cheap shit shampoo from poundland, coconut scented. i smell good
Right on thanks Sage, I just think the tgel mkes my hair feel diffrent after a shower then the dr. bronners does. I just have had good luck with the tgel. Only thing it didnt do as well as the bronners for me is make the itching go away for a few days.
