I think their credibility and reputation are slightly more important to them than reporting a completely false incident which would do very little for their political agenda and would be almost guaranteed lose them millions of customers and possibly close down the paper.

The fact that journalism is generally shitty doesn't negate the fact that people buy newspapers because they believe what they are reading is true. Credibility and reputation matter - look at the News of the World scandal.

The movie is called "Waking Life" and this clip really portrays what the Tibetans are trying to do; they burn themselves to show that they can withstand the pain and agony of killing oneself to try and inform the world of it's inhumanity.
