    In all honesty I haven't got the foggyest idea in hell what it means but it sounds great. Is this the suspected faster than the speed of light particle? I've followed it some and know that certain groups of people are scared shitless about the LCH. This is the kind of stuff that should be explained and detailed in the media as opposed to celebrity crap.

    Either that or they watched Tim Tebow pull off his latest Mile High miracle against the Chicago Bears :eek:

    I think that the Higgs Boson is supposed to be responsible for giving stuff mass

    Yeah, You're right. I did read that somewhere else. Cool Stuff worthwhile news to read about. Not that its something that affects my daily life, just cool to hear what science is doing and discovering.

    Thanks Chris from Scotland

    Good morning,

    uhm, and I though doughnuts are responsible for giving stuff mass ;).

    Regards

    The standard model has four forces, with each being mediated by a boson and a meson/lepton. Each with 3 more massive flavours:

    ie quarks up, down, strange, charm, top, bottom,

    Incidentally top and bottom used to be called truth and beauty but it fell out of favour due to philosophical confusions.

    Strong = quarks, gluons
    Weak = W,Z bosons, neutrinos, antinuetrinos
    Electromagnetism = electrons, photons

    Gravity = Higgs?, graviton? (hypothetical)

    That's all there is to it really.

    A nobel prize was recently awarded for unifying the weak force with electromagnetism, all that is left is to unify gravity and strong with the rest and you have a ToE, Theory of Everything. Currently general relativity cannot be unified with quantum mechanics because of the nature of the equations, one being non euclidean but classical, the other being stochastic or probability based. Higgs gives us the means to possibly reevaluate either QM or relativity so that a model of both can be formulated. As to how important that is, it's massive obviously. (pun intended)

    The faster than light thing was found to be a mistake in the observation by the way.

    Nuclear physics doesn't impress me.
