I don't get this mania over Pit Bulls anyway - what other breed of dog has it's own breed specific rescue centers? I have nothing against this breed, but in my neck of the woods I see idiots who have no business owning any kind of animal gravitating toward this breed because they think it's "bad ass" to have a pit. I know some of these thugs use them for dog fighting. Our local animal shelter is full of them, and I bet they put down several each week, just because fucking idiots get these dogs, mistreat them, find out that they ARE DANGEROUS when improperly handled and decide to make them someone else's problem. The temperament of these animals is open for debate, what's not open for debate is the fact that when these dogs do attack, they can be very fucking dangerous.

I agree with everything you said. The mania is a direct result of those things you listed after your question. A pitbull in the wrong hands can be a dangerous weapons. They are in danger because of those morons you mention give them a bad rap, and people fight to have them killed. The people who know how great a dog they can be fight to keep them alive.

Great Danes, for one...Dalmations, Labs...high maintenance dogs. A Pit is a high maintenance dog, and not for everybody. Corgi, Bulldog, Terrier...all types of breeds have specific rescue centers, not just "dangerous" ones.

Its sad, but true. OP, I'm sorry about your dog. That really sucks. :(

"it's the sweetest dog, my grand kids would play all day long with the dog" is what you hear on news after the dog chewed on the neighbor down the street.

The problem with pits are is when they do freak out the do some serious damage.

poodles french bulldogs chihuahuas boston terriers rotweilers bull mastifs weiner dogs look up any dog and youll find a rescue site designed specifically for them

and any dog can be dangerous, i have 3 bull dogs (1 french, one half boston half french, and one half american half french) they all have locking jaws, once they get a hold of something they dont let go, they could seriously mes you up. the only dog ive ever been attacked by was a shnauzer (sp?) dont base your prejudices on what youve heard, yes they can be fucking dangerous.....IF YOU TRAIN THEM TO BE. dogs are like kids, if you raise you kid like an asshole, they generally turn out to be assholes.

and yes they were bred to be protectors, and thats what they do, protect. if you come up on almost any dog you dont know and have the wrong stance or demeanor theyre going to be rather unfriendly.

Moe you know I love you with all my heart but I want to correct you on a few points here.

Regarding the whole locking jaw thing - it's not true. Some dogs have POWERFUL jaws (including pitbulls rotweillers and some bulldogs). Once they get a hold of something and they dont want to let go, it's hard to make them let go, but there is no such thing as a locking jaw. It's a common misconception though.

About the pitbulls being bred to protect thing, this isnt true either. They WERE however bred to fight other dogs. Hence the ''pit'' part. It's about pit fighting. This means that they can have agressive tendencies towards other dogs, but they were never meant to be human agressive. Actually, the dogmen from back in the day would put down their human agressive dogs, and at the least not let them breed. Human agression was bred out of them. I've never, ever, ever seen my dog not like a person. She just wants to love everyone. She doesnt like to be challenged by other dogs though.

All that being said, the dog agression doesnt mean they cant make amazing pets. It just means that this is something that a responsible dog owner needs to keep in mind. Pitbulls come with different responsibilities than shih-tzus, and denying that is just plain wreckless and ignorant! haha.

I still have my dog by the way. I'm in no rush to give her away. Fuck the insurance companies, bringing her to the SPCA is an absolute last resort for me. I'm getting in touch with a guy from the country who used to be a pit breeder (had to stop because of the new laws) and his old boy just died so he might be interested in my girl. I think that would be ideal and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I have been afraid to ask. I am glad you still have her and are waiting for the right person. It is going to hurt like hell when you give her up. she will be sad too. If you find the right person you will feel better about letting go.

i didnt know that about being bred specifically to fight other dogs. and i didnt mean their jaws literally lock, i meant they have the extremely strong jaws.

i am in no way denying that having a pit bull is different for many reasons, but i am saying almost all of their personality traits come from the way they were raised. even pitbulls that were raised and bred to fight and get rescued can turn out to be the sweetest most loving dogs, not just to people but to other dogs too..........
