Not only is blood an extremely powerful carrier of energy but each animal on top of that carries specific qualities that can be 'harvested' by killing them in ritual. Although magic revolving around the killing of animals as a sacrifice usually entitle voodoo i'm not exactly sure what it could be. In most common cases it's probably a misguided soul doing it for self fulfillment, not mysticism.
