The Harrier is a dangerous aircraft to fly as recognized by most pilots who have experience flying it. Lift and thrust capacity is centrally directed between two opposite sources. Lost any degree of stability in one source and the aircraft is thrown out of balance. At low airspeed it is a death trap should misfire occur with one of its engines.

CounterRotating blades in modern helicopters eliminates the need for anti-torque mechanics thus reducing the need for a tail rotor system which is good but does not reduce the amount of moving parts. Inside the main rotorShaft are counterRotating movements at very close tolerances. The blades are not as subject to self distructive energy as the transmission parts moving against each other in very close proximities.

Computers work very well in nonEventful flight. However, only human reflex can fly in unpredictable conditions associated with below the tree line, high speed and radical flight configurations common with military use. By the way, Russia leads the world in flight technology especially with helicopter development. But even they can't seem to encourage production in aircraft that reduces the use of torque in attaining stable flight.

Thanks for you well thought out and informative posts.. I accessed the links and have done so in one or two cases earlier.

Personally i believe counter prop [on top] with gas driven tail control.
[no rear prop.]
Or.. the example set by v22.
Which is not much different to flying car.
just of greater power and proven reliability.

As an aside.. the German efforts in ww2 'intermeshing props' The FL 282..
the WORLDS first production helocopter.

It is really a good invention and hope it works out, easy to maintain and cost effective
