I'm learning TM on may the 5th and my main question is that is it completely necessary to not smoke marijuana leading up to it. it's going to be 7 days between when i learn TM and when i last smoked. Is that going to be a huge deterrent and learning TM? I feel like 7 days is enough of a break between learning TM and not smoking compared to the recommended 15 days. can someone please shed some light?

Yes, it's necessary to follow the teaching, including the caveats - That's the teaching. I gave up weed, and LSD for a year before I learned as they requested. It wasn't easy. Learn it, or don't.

But didn't Buddha reject his teaching?

No. Zen practitioners were taught to live for themselves and make their own life's choices which is where the Kill Buddha quote comes from. A little research will go a long ways towards mistaken information.

And in the Dhammapada Buddha says to try his teaching rather than take it on faith. Neither of those instances of teaching said to just simply not try.

I learned TM 31 years ago and I'll never regret it. It is a haven for one's sanity. Therefore one must learn it without recourse to substances or other 'isms.' It is harder to follow Buddhism than give up pot for two weeks to learn TM. Believe me on that!

But if we should take it on faith that one must abstain, why shouldn't you take it on faith when one of us says pot is good for the sanity? Isn't that a touch hypocritical?

Not that I'm saying that... I personally don't think there is any such thing as sanity. And if there were, I would prefer it over self-discipline. Any exercise standing on my head for 3 hours a day will be good for my sanity if I'm told it is by someone I admire.

Can someone help with the practice of TM? I really want to start now but don't have time to go out and learn by someone, I feel I can teach myself, it's just so hardto find anything on it ugghhh

Preconceived illusions of meditation may prolong the spontaneous.
