I sit and nap in my truck a lot. Especially at work during lunch. I've never been accosted by cops or anyone. Just sit and listen to music or npr. Why would sitting in ones car be a crime or probable cause. I could see being homeless nd getting harrassed by cops for sleeping in your car but why make a law against sitting in a car? Some people want total control over others, especially power hungry officials but sitting in ones car is harmless and for some a last refuge for silence or alone time.
This, to me, seems like a testament to the compartmentalized nature of modern society. Cars seem like airports in the sense that they're kind of transitory; like they're spaces between actual destinations. The existence of a car is subordinate to its function, which is to move people and things from place to place. Airports are the same. To choose to spend time in a car seems to embrace the kind of 'solitary-in-a-crowd' nature first-world society has taken on. Also seems good for thinking. I should hang out in airports more often.
Cars are more than just a mean of transportation. They're your wheels. Your wings. I suppose ones car means a lot of different things to different people. But to many it becomes the only thing that's yours and no one else's. A place of solitude and peace. Throughout my teenage years I basically lived out of my car and showered at my parents house. My car was my key to adventure, and gave me the ability to be where I want to be when I want to be there. /stoned ramble So yeah I've spent a lot of time in cars. I still like to drive to a random spot and chill out to some music.
frieden come to flordia and we can both hit the road....if your soft top can swim across the Pacific lol
My '98 Nissan Quest has been my refuge, in times of trouble, many times. It has tinted windows, so I can nap, sleep, rest, live in the back for extended periods. I go out and spend hours in it listening to the radio, or just catching some Z's. It's been my home during times when my wife was being herself, and I wasn't welcome. It wasn't until my son insisted that I was invited back in, and at that point, I just claimed one of the extra bedrooms for myself, got a lock on the door, and put extra sound baffling on the door, to keep the nagging down. But yeah, the van has great sentimental value. It's where I chill, listen to the radio, play along on harmonica, etc. It's my most reliable refuge. And I love the way the Quest has movable seating, so that you can make a big space in the back, a big flat area to lie down. But even if the seats are in the way, I can situate them in ways that allow me to stretch out. If I couldn't stretch out, I'd really feel cramped. But the van is 15 years old now, and beginning to show the true signs of age, and I may have to give her up for something newer, with better gas mileage. Whatever the case, it has to have room in the back to stretch out, and tinted windows.
There have been times I've just chilled in my car like that. Like when I had a roommate and my car was the only place there was just for me.
I gotta say it Arthur, it sounds like taking that van and Parkin it down by the river would be a more ideal situation than what you described. FTS* *FTS is a new "Internet slang" that I just made up. It stands for 'Fuck That Shit.' I will use it as often as I can and will never again explain what it is. Edit: my bubble has just been google popped. . FTS is already in use. Day late and a dollar short

A lot of people take their cars for granted. I don't have one so whenever I'm in a car I'm having a blast just listening to the radio and sitting in the comfortable seats. I could see how people would think of a car as a safe haven. I like Jeeps but I would love a van or even a pickup so I can sit in the back and just relax looking at the sky when I don't feel like being in the house.
Car is totally me-space. ......I get wicked pissed when people don't respect my car.... Not like dislike it, but physically.
hell yeah that's the way to live. I'd rather have a full size conversion van, though. with a table and whatnot.
It is nice to have a table. We owned a mini-motorhome once, on a Toyota truck body. Self-contained. Oven, stove, refrig, toilet. Just no shower. It was pretty tiny, but we lived in it with our 2 pre-school-age children for a while, until it began to feel cramped, and my wife and I weren't getting along. That doesn't work well. But in the Quest, we can at least fold the middle seats and the rear seat completely down, if we need a "table". On the back of the seats, they put a hard plastic surface, molded into a tray, and a cup holder each. It's very versatile. Still, it's really good only for one, or two if you're getting along,,haha.
