I'm generally not a country music fan, but this girl is phenomenal. She sings songs in keys that most female vocalists only dream of, and her lyrics are often profound and thought-provoking. She was getting nominations for awards before anybody ever heard of Shania Twain, and has outlasted her by quite a few years.

When music critics write books about the history of this decade and the last one, Martina's name will be near the top of their lists. In a musical genre that is often quite shallow and superficial, she is the real deal.

I've heard a lot of good versions of "Independence Day" but nobody has done it better than Pat Benatar:

It's a somewhat angry song, and nobody has more attitude than Benatar, with the possible exception of Joan Jett. The song totally works for her.

I am a big fan of country music, and honestly I find her music annoying and generic, like a female toby keith trying to fund raise for something

I'm somewhere between you two on her. She does have a very powerful voice.

Martina is at her best when she has a positive, uplifting message:

The video looks a little slick and commercial for my taste, but it gets its points across. When you meet random people on the street, you never know what serious challenges they may be facing. It is too easy to forget that. And no goal worth reaching is ever achieved without a good bit of stubbornness.

She does a lot of songs about being a mom, which I avoid. I can't relate.

Within the broad category of country music, I find bluegrass to be a more pure and noncommercial art form, but it doesn't have a lot of songs that make you think.

I hate the original video for this next one, but can't get enough of the song, so I linked to the lyrics-only version:

Maybe Martina would be better known outside of the country music world if this had not been her only crossover #1 hit record, so far.
