I have an aunt who ever since she was a little kid, she knew she wanted to be a doctor. She became one. I ask her why, and she just tells me that she WANTS to, and that's reason enough.
I have a friend who wanted to be a lawyer, and is on his way to becoming one.
Another friend who dreams of building a house. She's now an architect.

I'm surrounded by people who know what they want, and what to do with their lives. No hesitations, 100% sure.

I, however, have no idea where I'm going and what to do with my life. It's kinda depressing.

Do I have a problem? Or are there people who are fortunate enough to know exactly what they're looking for and then there are those who will grow old not knowing what they want to do with their life?

    What's your opinion?

In my experience somepeople 'know' and others wonder what they want to do with their lives - both are quite normal I think.

You don't mention how old you are? :)

I've never had any idea of a career or any other plan for life. As a result I stumbled into some jobs I would never had otherwise considered - archaeologist, tree planter, market stallholder.

I think its probably been more fun than it would have been if I'd planned everything out at an early age, but different strokes...having everything mapped out probably suits some people.

DMFP: Well, I'm 22 years old. I'm an undergrad taking an engineering course. It's okay IMO, but it ain't "the one". Haha
Interactivemonodrama: But you do know what you want, right? Knowing how to get there is a different story. What would you do if you have absolutely no idea, no definite ambition?
The Imaginary Being: Thank you for the vid. =))

I knew from a young age 12/13 what I wanted to do and I've done that for all my working years. It was built-in in some way.

I think it's pretty common to not know what u want to do in life.
as far as i'm concerned, i've wanted to be fluent in english since i took my first english class. Then when i was in college i started teaching as a substitute teacher, and i had an epiphany : i loved it, wanted to teach english forever, and i realized that i had wanted to do that all my life. Im sayin it was an epiphany because i had never realized that before.
i consider that i am very lucky, especially since i get to meet a lot of kids now who don't know what to do with their lives.
i also see a lot of kids who suddenly find something they want to do, so yes, u might find your ideal job when u least expect it

there is nothing wrong with you if you don't "know" what you are "doing" with your life. the most important thing is that you are living it. there is this henry miller quote i love - "the aim of life is to live, and to live is to be aware. joyously, serenely, divinely, drunkenly, aware." we only get one dance on this earth in this conscious form, so it is worth living it. yeah, there comes a time when each of us should grow up and do some shit, and it takes some living and exploring and self-introspection to figure out what that shit is. i don't think there is anything wrong with pursuing what one said they'd pursue from an early age, but i think the best "careers" are those found with careful reflection into one's interests, desires, needs, and goals. then, with those nebulous concepts in mind, you can put what you want out into the world, point yourself in the direction of and go confidently in your dreams, and hope that luck, good fortune, and a bit of perseverence and hard work will allow your dream "career" to unfold. it worked for me, and i am thrilled with my current place in space. best of luck in your self- and life- pursuits. and, remember, it is a continually unfolding journey.

You might know a whole lot more about your career choices than you think.
I have had two very different sort of jobs that took me outdoors a lot and I liked both of them for the same reason.
I have also had jobs where you sit at a desk all day and they were very different work, but I hated it and counted the days until I could find something to take its place.

If you are good with people and want social interaction in your work, there are some jobs that absolutely deny that to you and other jobs that guarantee social interaction.

If you feel that you would die if your work didn't allow you to express your creative side (writing, painting, photography, or craftsmanship) then once again there are jobs that are all about that and some like loading trucks that are nothing to do with creativity.

Are you one of these people who likes to be told what to do in great detail and take pride in carrying it out to the letter? There's a job or two for you.

These general work environments give you some idea of how to get started. Take your talents, your hobbies, your personality and rule out a few things that are wrong for you, and maybe you will figure out where your life is headed.
And along the way, you may discover new talents and interests. That's okay too.

My plans were severely put on hold when my wife died.

We were both going to be nurses and live out our life doing what we both loved.

Both of my parents were nurses and she loved working with the mentally handicapped.

I worked as a medic in the army for 5 years and right after I got out she died in an accident. I really took it rough and just took work in restaurants and schools. Just to keep my mind off of it. Worked myself to death in dead in jobs. I could never truly commit to anything and would just up and leave for something else when i got bored.

Now with a child I'm gonna start school and finally get my nurses license. I've done many things I always wanted to do like Bartending and coaching, but it's time I finally do what I always set out to do. I owe it to Stacy and my son.

I don't know for sure what I want yet. There are far too many things I'm interested in.

I adore the job I have now, but it's not a career. I'm great with kids and I'm working towards becoming a primary school teacher, but I also have intellectual interests and I sometimes fear my mind wouldn't be as fulfilled as I'd like. I'm really into psychology, but I don't have great scientific or mathematical backing. I love speaking French, but language jobs are competitive or poorly paid and I only speak English otherwise. I'm not very studious but I'm not into manual labour or taking orders. Aside from the problem of slotting my personality into the right career, I also want to become a mother at some point, and hopefully not too far in the future.

It's hard. I envy people who've always known for sure.

Often, a person won't know the true meaning of their lives until they see it in review.
