So for availability reasons I'm going to be buying anywhere from a half to full oz of boomers and I'm curious if they're okay to keep wrapped in a ziploc bag for 4 months (want to eat them in December for Dec 21, 2012 just incase some shit goes down I want to be TRIPPIN)
I don't think you should put them in the fridge or a humidor. You want to keep them dry. Store them in an airtight ziploc in a dark, dry, and cool place. Also, don't you mean 7 months?
That's a long time for shrooms. I would grind them into powder and pack them tightly: tied in a flip top baggy with no air. (Powdering allows you to get much more air out than you can with them whole.) I'd then put those baggies into ziplock baggies, in a mason jar, and in the freezer. (Fridge will make them soft and bad quickly.) You could also try an ethanol extraction. I've always wanted to try that. Supposedly you can get an oz down to a little bit of alcohol extract and store it in the fridge for a long time.
The things that will reduce your potency are heat, oxygen, uv light and moisture so these are the foes you have to defeat. Whenever I have dried whole mushrooms I first ensure they are completely dry by placing them in a dessicant chamber for a few days to ensure that every last bit of water is sucked from them, They are then packed tightly into a glass jar with a rubber gasket lid to keep all outside air away from the mushrooms (air can seep through plastic baggies). Also in the jar is a large desiccant packet to absorb all moisture in the air in the jar as well as a oxygen absorbing packet to keep the air in the jar completely oxygen free. Lastly the jar is placed in a Crown Royal purple bag and then put in the freezer. But I rarely keep whole mushrooms long as I usually grind them up and pack them into gel capsules and then store them in vaccum packed mylar bags.
That's a good idea. Do you happen to know how long the oxygen absorbing packets last? Like, if I take one our of a pack of vitamins or crackers or something, is it already depleted? Do you get the packets sealed up in something until you need them?
I used to buy a bag of beef jerky every month and take the absorbing packet out of that and put a new one in there every time I purchase a new bag of beef jerky. Gave them a nice beef jerky aroma also.
I toss a bunch into the jar and they will absorb all of the oxygen and the interior atmosphere will stay O2 free until you open the jar again. http://www.amazon.com/Oxygen-Absorbers-Package-Capacity-Absorption/dp/B0028AG8RO"]Amazon.com: Oxygen Absorbers - 100 Count Sealed Package - 100 CC Capacity - Oxy Absorption Packets Remove / Absorb O2 - For Food Storage & More.: Home & Kitchen
