Was their ever proof that this legendary animal even existed? Other than being in books and fairy tales has their ever been real proof or a body found?

Nah.. I don't think so. There's usually a lot of underlining truths when it comes to folk lore, so it wouldn't surprise me maybe if there was. There have been more far fetched animals detailed in scriptures. A horse with a horn, I can see that.
The introduction of domesticated animals was quite sudden. If you believe aliens experimented with genetic manipulation to achieve cultivation purposes then it's probably a sure thing that a unicorn roamed the earth. Just look at the bull and the ram.
Now our ancient powerful gods were usually depicted as horned beings. A horned stallion.. Anyone know a horse shaped god?
The unicorn was probably depicted as a chariot of a god.

Not that this would necessarily be considered "proof" - but the unicorn is mentioned several times (9, if I'm correct) in the bible. Even some biblical concordances indicate along side the references that this is a mythical creature, and that it "probably means wild ox".
However, I don't know why it would have been translated as unicorn when they meant (wild) ox since definitely oxen - wild and otherwise - is also mentioned.
It pleases me to think that indeed, there were unicorns. Mostly the bible speaks of their horn(s) and their strength.

No, I doubt it. I'd say it was a case of mistaken identity. Some traveler in ancient times probably saw a Rhino, and when they went back to their homeland they described it to their friends as a horse with a horn. Something along those lines started the myth.

Unicorns are real. Let's all dress in our parkas , hop on a ship and go to the artic circle. They swim around all the time there.

Actually, Ducks funny pic is closest to the truth. Some narwhalhorns found their way south in medieval times and where imagined to be of unicorns. I don't know what seems more believable if you don't know these animals: a sea mammal with such a horn or a unicorn
