listening to things you dont like helps form opinions on what you DO enjoy. Even shitty tunes give a person insight to what they are looking for in sounds ;)

don't be one of those people that says "if it's on the radio it must be shit. i only listen to underground". some music deserves to be on the radio, and some should stay underground.

This may be true, but it's definitely more likely to be the other way around. Not to pick a fight, im sure you agree. It is possible to still have a liking for "deep" music and still like one or 2 songs on the radio... I guess? :punk:

Listen to all types of music. don't hate on music from a certain style. When I started to listen to music form all different genres I found stuff I liked from country, Rock, Punk, Techno, Alternative. Their is so much out there not to explore.

Don't read or trust reviews, especially in big publications.

-check out a list of genres like this.
-look into any that have interesting names. hell, just check out all of them.
-listen to some stuff from the genre you selected.
-if it grabs you, make a pandora station.
    -sit back and enjoy.

that has worked for me for the last few years. before that, i just took in whatever i could. some i liked. some i didn't like... and it was thrown in the trash heap of my mind.

also, take note of compositional characteristics you find pleasing, and seek those out.
