goddam, I hate how fucking wasteful we Americans are! we blow through food resources like there's no fucking tomorrow with hardly any regard for what happens to what we don't use. It pisses me off to no end because, just think, with all the tons of food that's wasted everyday in this country, we might be able to actually do something about all the children who go hungry, just in this country to say nothing of what could happen throughout the rest of the world if we figured out how to better manage things!! you think a starving beggar in Ethiopia or Sudan or Nepal with his family would turn down some American leftovers if in a perfect world we could get it to him or her cleanly? I'll never forget the day I walked into a convenience store, and saw the clerk take an entire hot pizza out of the rack and dump it handily into the trash, I felt like throttling him on the spot! Never gave that place my business again. I saw it for years in college dining halls the trash bins were filled with mostly uneaten food. Now today I've seen another egregious example of ridiculous amounts of food left unused and being sent to god-only-knows-where to be discarded. OOH there was enough food left over to feed at least 7-10 more people and its all wasted unnecessarily I'm pissed! I've volunteered at local soup kitchens, I've participated in food drives, so I see the need is there, but it's like for every one thing that goes toward helping others a metric ton goes nowhere sigh...
As a whole we throw away half of the food that we produce world wide... I't not just Americans. (Although Americans may be high on the list of "Most Wasteful") Some of it just doesn't look right so it hits the trash before consumers even see it. Some of it is pre made fast foods that get tossed after sitting too long. (It's still eatable, just that the clock said toss it. Much like the pizza you noted.) Much of it sits too long at the grocery store because of over purchasing... Of course they priced it so high nobody could afford it. Yeah, wasteful lot these people.
I think first we should focus on the starving beggars in Chicago, and every other city in America. So many charities for overseas while children are starving here
You're right, we should eat everything on our goddamned plate. I'm sure that's not what contributed to our obesity crisis. And for the record, the world already produces PLENTY of food for everyone--roughly 5,000 calories for everyone on earth, although it would probably be more if we let cows eat grass instead of giving them our corn. World hunger is a problem of retarded food distribution practices and greedy policies by international conglomerates, NOT a lack of food. Besides, of all the things Americans waste, food isn't all that bad--at least it decomposes (except mcdonalds, of course). Try working in healthcare and having to throw away shit tons of plastic and latex products every day.
hmm... on reconsidering... I probably should've put this in the whiners forum; I was just pissed and needed a vent:devil:
i never understood this type of thinking. why should i care more about a starving american than i should about a starving ethiopian? i've seen a lot of food go to waste at my college dining hall when i worked there. they couldn't give it to soup kitchens because if it made someone sick they would be legally responsible.
it worked for our parents & grandparents why should that fall out of favor just because we eat more and eat more shit? Good point; I am in health professions, and damn you're right we do go through so much supplies, but with that I just saw it as a necessary thing, since they're likely biohazardous and their useful purpose is done. With the food thing it's that there's nothing really wrong with it at the time, it's still perfectly viable.
Because they are your 'neighbors.' And more of what you give goes to the people that need it. Instead of going into transportation of goods, or handling of funds going around the world. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with feeding Ethiopians, I just wonder why I don't see commercials on TV with starving Americans. Its astonishing that we can have such a high obesity rate and still see people goin hungry in every city and town. I bet other Industrialized Countries would laugh their ass off if they saw a commercial for feeding starving kids in America.
But it has to be ready for me when I drive up to the window. I want it now and I want it all. HOT AND READY BABY! But you can't throw anything away. I want to mount my fish and eat it to.
