We’re Alice and Stef, two young film makers who work for the progressive film company Current TV over here in London.

We’re both really interested in the Rainbow Gathering and would love to film parts of this year’s gathering to give an open view of what Rainbow People believe in and what these gatherings are all about.

As you can probably imagine it’s quite hard doing a lot of the research from another country, so we were wondering whether you would be able to help?

We have booked our flights to arrive in Charlotte, North Carolina for the 25th of June, but if we understand correctly, the exact location of the gathering isn’t revealed until the 2nd week of June? We’re arriving a week early, because we’re hoping to meet some people before the gathering and perhaps film their story and reasons behind attending.

From our research we read that at each gathering there is a wedding, a birth and a death. Is this information correct and if so could you give us a little more information about it?

Also, having spoken to a few Rainbow people who will be attending this year, we believe that filming shouldn’t be a problem at the gathering as long as we ask each individual for their permission prior to recording.

Any information or help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Take care,
    Alice and Stef

Given it is Current, I think this would be a great idea and wouldn't mind being interviewed at the Gathering. In addition to your research you can read People of the Rainbow: A Nomadic Utopia and even though it was written in the late 90s, it can certainly help you understand the underlying principles and philosophy of the Rainbow Family.

Ask before you film. Some folks do not wish to be filmed. Other folks want to be filmed. It shows respect when one asks, even if 10,000 folks are filming always ask.

You don't just "ask" someone to be filmed. You must get them to sign a legal release and pay them something (usually one dollar). Otherwise you leave yourself open to lawsuits.

Of course we are talking about Rainbow people here who aren't so uptight, but still you need to legally protect your investment in the film.

And we're all revealing our age here. Nobody "films" anything anymore. It's video now.

Good luck. People got bent out of shape in New Mexico when I was shooting scenery...like mountains...not people.
In my years, only Gray Eagle was relatively unhassled as a photog. He was wonderful, and had sideshows occasionally.

But yes, you will need a basic model release, and many versions are online.
Bring many, many copies. Get legal names along with whatever they go by.

    Alice and Stef,

At last summer's National Rainbow in Washington state there was a talented French filmaker named Matthieu and he filmed a lot of stuff and took many still shots. Check them out at:

Look under the "Portraits of a Nomadic America Jack Kerouac's legacy" tab. Contact him through his web site if you have any questions.
If you are flying in to the gathering, Karin Zirk says that Knoxville Tennessee would be the closest you might get by airport:

I'd suggest coming to Asheville and hanging out there...I would venture to guess that the streets here will fill up with Rainbow folks waiting for the gathering. Besides it is a MUCH nicer place to hang than Charlotte!!!
