If on a single day, everyone turned themselves in for smoking weed, the criminal justice system simply wouldn't be able to process it all and they would realise the only option is to give up on the bullshit. Thus legalising drugs. It would also take too much of a toll on society if all stoners had to pay the penalties for it at once. Do you think this would work?

Simply refusing to plea bargain, insisting on jury trial- I think that would put the system under. Really, if you think about, their really aren't trials in this country anymore. Almost never- what, maybe one case in a thousand? One in ten thousand?

No one will risk 30-life for a case piled up with charges where they can plead guilty to a lesser offense and get off with six months or a fine.

There was a case in Oklahoma where a guy charged in a marijuana bust pled Not Guilty- and it was supposedly the first time that had ever happened in the history of the county. He paid dearly for daring to plead Not Guilty. He was convicted and sentenced to 93 years.

I'm pretty sure there is some organized group out there trying to "break the system" by just getting people in drug cases to assert their rights. If everyone did, nearly all drug charges against all offenders would have to be dismissed because the courts couldn't provide trials ever, the backlog of just current cases would run longer than today's life spans.

Well, what a lot of people don't realize is that the federal government gives large subsidies to county jails and state prisons to incarcerate each person-the amount they pay per person per day far exceeds the cost of incarcerating them, which means that the local governments are making a big profit off of locking them up-it's one reason police departments are so eager to arrest people today and DA's are so eager to prosecute them. It started with Reagan's philosophy that the government should operate like a profit-making business. Go ahead and turn yourself in-they'd be glad to have your business.

What do you mean "turn themselves in"? If the person is not in POSSESSION of the drug, they aren't criminals. You can admit to smoking pot all you want, but it is the possession of the controlled substance that is the crime.

I suppose if everyone came to the local police precinct with a dime bag in their shirt pocket to give to the officer as a gift, then that would be a slightly different story.
