First of all, this is my first post. I'm new here, so Hello everyone! One of these days, i want to get a vw, or some sort of a larger van. Maybe just borrow my neighbors, if they would be nice enough. And just go on a road trip with some other hippies, strangers and friends alike. It would be great to have company of friends, and to make new ones. One day i will make this dream a reality. We will drive all over the country, visiting all sorts of great scenic beautiful places. And just get away from all the drama and problems of society for awhile. Every needs a get away every now and then.
As an old hippie (68) and still living on the periphery of society I have some experience with those road trips. Those old VW Vans were really under powered. If you're serious about that road trip think in terms of something that has enough power to climb mountain passes with a full load. (I've seen a few old VW vans with a porsche engine). Take someone with you that is familiar with the western states because that is where you will find the best 'hideaways' ..such as Idaho, Montana, New Mexico and Arizona. Avoid Utah...it is overrun with yuppies. A great place to start is in Quartzsite Arizona it has a huge long term area (BLM land) and is really cheap. I spent two winters there. If I wasn't so damn old I would go with you....I miss those days.
yeah arizona ... hits a full chord in me ... and I love van trips out into the blue, the simple life of being on the edge, and closer to nature ... also closer to the silence of the world which is music to me. Still, nowadays the crowd seems never far specially on great scenic places ... but perfectness shows best when it's not (perfect). Enjoy the ride !
Ok thanks for the tips guys. I checked out some images and read a little about tht quarzsite AZ pace, it looks really neat, and i'll make sure to visit it. Also this will be my first month or two long road trip. Are there any sort of supplies that i should bring that will come in handy, besides like, food, water, clothes and stuff. Also, i hate asking this, but do you guys think it would be safe to bring marijuana with me, and if we do, any good tips on how to hide it?
If you go Quartzsite Az it is only 30 miles from the California border and about 150 to the Mexican border. This area is heavily patrolled so not a good idea to be carrying pot. Even if you are sleeping in the Van you should have a small tent just in case. The one thing you will always be looking for is ways to carry water...so keep that in mind when you get supplies. And of course a good road Atlas is a must. Once you leave electricity behind you will be using flash lights A LOT. Always have a mini-mag flashlight within easy reach. And always have an extra car key tucked in your wallet and not under the vehicle frame. Bring along at least 1 easy fold up lawn chair and small camping fold up table. The table top does not need be any bigger 24 inches by 24 inches. Have fun! Rocco
