    [FONT=&quot]Hi there!!

At a time when gay rights are re-emerging as an election year issue, I think that depictions of gay characters on television play a big role in making viewers more comfortable with people like us.

Although TV has definitely made progress, I think most gay characters still emphasize heteronormativity and underscore mainstream values.

What do you think? Is TV gay enough? What's your opinion on GLB characters on TV?

Hope I don't look lowbrow but the only show I've seen with a gay couple is Trailer Park Boys with Jim and Randy as shown above. But that wasn't really flaunted except for a few hilarious scenes, like when they are first caught doing gay kinky stuff by Julian. They might seem ashamed at first but anyone would get embarassed being caught like that. So I'm glad they never really portrayed it seriously as a bad thing.

How gay does it have to be? Is there a quota?

Depends on the viewer. It may already be TOO gay for some. Not me, of course.

i think tv is fine as it is

you have to consider the amount of people who are strait and gay in the audience

so i think it should be proportionate to that number.

    no offense

but i don't think it's fair for strait audiences to watch two men bumming each other.

please remember the majority of people are heterosexual.

Randy and Lahey are a perfect example of gay acceptance. Their sexuality isn't really talked about, but they eventually hook up together and everyone accepts them. Ricky even questions his own sexuality, saying "maybe I am gay"

Please, I am unfamiliar with the term 'heteronormativity' it sounds derogatory and completely made up. Look up the website outtv.ca it's literally all gay programming. All gay all day!

    Yeah, heteronormativity?

Counterproductive, you just end up sounding full of yourself if you use words like that.

TV and Music, nothing is really mainstream anymore, all genres seem to be running simultaneuosly

Well, its not like we can really say we need the amount of gay characters to increase because honestly we are still the minority, what is it, 20% or so identify as Gay/Lesbian/Bi (well, America anyway) and on any really "mainstream" or popular show there's always atleast 1 or 2 characters(out of ~15 regular cast) that are obviously gay or whatever and I think for the most part that yes, they are being portrayed in a positive or nuetral light, and lets face it, numbers wise thats a decent representation and accurate. So I say TV representation is already fair.

I don't have a problem watching gay people on TV, but The subject more often than not becomes the main issue. Will and Grace is unwatchable. If there was a person in my day to day life that actually acted like that squirrely gay dude that was so annoying, I would probably beat his ass, not because he is gay, but because he is annoying as fuck and loud and obtrusive..

20% sounds like a very high estimate.. I don't believe that 1 in 5 is gay.

another thing I don't understand.. If you like to like dick and you have a dick, Why does that affect the way you talk, walk, dress, act, etc? What does that possibly have to do with each other?

Maybe it's an advertising thing, so gays can tell each other apart, but The media is the catalyst for all this anyway.. Monkey see monkey doo i guess.

See, back before gay people were "all in your face about it", It was less of an issue than it is now. then the media started portraying them how they think they should act so of course the masses followed...

    STRAIGHT PRIDE!!!

:)I think the views of Americans are finally becoming more inclusive in terms of differant peoples sexuality.
The church I belong to is all inclusive, welcomes Transgenders,Gays,Big Sexual and Lesbians. The Unitarian Universalist Church has a gay, big, transgender Youth Outreach Youth Program weekly so boys girls who were born gay, big, lesbian can find and recreate with like peers who accept them as they were born and enjoy recreation with those like themselves helping to make life more enjoyable and cutting down on the high gay youth suicide rate in America.
They also sponcer The Navagators Youth groups that are like the Boy Scouts but non discriminatory concerning gay, lesbian, big sexual, transgender,Atheist and Agnostic youths, all are welcomed accepted!
People are starting to realize that TV stars,Sports Figures,Teachers,Mailman,Clergy, policemen relatives, kids, and others including the neighbor next door can and are gays and lesbians.
Few of us are 100% heterosexual, most like somewhere in the left right of the gay lesbian hetero sexual spectrum:),unfortunately for so many,we have long had a devisevive and sexually prejudicial culture where many were denied their full sexuality.
Organizations like some religions, schools,Boy Scouts of America who still have their head in the sand and discriminate are as responsible concerning those that end up committing suicide as youths due to Bullying and peer adult discrimination as much as anyone, lets hope television continues to help make these impressions for positive change for love, not hate in American society.
