My girlfriend is experiencing an abnormally heavy period. She says it's to the point of making her worry. It's usually heavy for the first day or two, but it's still heavy after 3 days. We had sex once and fooled around a few times in the last few days. What might be the cause?

She could have developed some benign polyps. They can cause heavy bleeding.

I advised her to call a doctor if it is still heavy tomorrow. Is it most likely a nbd thing?

It probably is nbd if it's a one time thing. She doesn't want to let it go on so long that she becomes weak and anemic from it. They can give her something to stop it. I bled for 13 days with the first period I had after my first baby. They told me then that if it didn't stop in a day or so they'd prescribe something like that.

If she isn't having unusual pain or getting weak I wouldn't think it's an emergency at this point.

Did you use a condom? How long before her period did you guys have sex? She may have gotten pregnant and is having a very-early miscarriage. I don't mean to freak you out, it happens a lot more than you'd think and a lot of times the woman never knows she's pregnant. As long as it resolves in a few days it's nothing to worry about. Or, as Aerianne said, she could have some benign uterine cysts going on. Or endometriosis, which is also common, but as long as it's not painful it's nothing to worry about.
