Media outlets are reporting that a Turkish f-4 phantom war plane was shot down over the Mediterranean today by Syria. Syrian officials are claiming the aircraft was flying over Syrian airspace, less than a mile offshore . And that Syrian antiaircraft gunners shot it down . Tensions at the borders were high already , because Turkey a n.a.t.o. member supports the Syrain rebels against the current regime . According to news stories Syrain government rescue teams are actively searching for and cooperating to find the air crew of the f-4 .

The Turkish response was that the incident is being looked into and that necessary steps would be taken . They have not stated that the downed aircraft was a provoking attack on the Turkish jet . It could be now however ,that this is no longer A Syrian civil conflict .

I did read that the Turkish jets flew very low over Alleppo, a Syrian port, in attack formation and broke the sound barrier, causing booms. One was shot down the other escaped.

At the time that happened, Syria had grounded all its planes due to the defection the day before that saw a captain pilot his Syrian Mig 21 to Jordan and asked for asylum.

Some say the downing of the Turkish jet was in retaliation for Turkey being involved in the defection.

This can only inflame tensions as the world's powers align their military forces in a face off that could so easily start WWIII.

Syria now has the most modern Russian anti-aircraft systems and even cruise missiles and WMD like the world's largest chemical weapons stash.

So they're not going to be a push over esp. with the Russian, Chinese and Iranian fleets on their way to defend Syria. So something might happen before all these ships reach Syria.

I think the whole Egyptian situation is pending due to the 12 Chinese + Iranian ships due to pass thru the Suez canal. I think the election is being rigged just so that the Egyptian military can keep control over the canal and stop the Iranians who'd been barred from using the canal for years, until Mubarak was thrown out.

Don't know .... seems too much of a coincidence. The thing is Syria says the plane was inside their airspace and the Turks are NOT denying it.

I also read somewhere that both, Syrian AND Turkish, navy vessels are conducting search operations. A joint mission??

Feels to me as if everybody is rattling the sabers but nothing happens.

Nobody really wants to make this shit happen.

If the election is rigged it's not for that specific reason. It's simply power.

But one way or another they will fuck it up if they don't get a grip on the country within 3 months.

Looks like I'm right! The Syrians used the latest Russian anti-aircraft system to down the Turkish jet, which was on reconnaissance, watching the Russian ships unload.

This article states that it might've been Russians who actually shot down the plane since the systems are too new for the Syrians to have been trained yet.

Meanwhile Turkey may invoke its NATO defense pact, which would mean all NATO countries would come to its defense if things escalate!

Funny thing is the Israelis are saying that since Turkey cut off military ties with Israel a couple of years ago (over the gaza blockade ship incident), they haven't been able to install the latest Israeli counter measures in their jets and thus are easy targets for Syria.

Of course those F-4 are hardly the latest equipment and are usually used only for reconnaissance these days. In fact, these F-4s were doing daily runs along the Syrian coast. So it's quite likely the Syrians knew exactly what they were doing, and it wasn't a "mistake". It was a warning!

Looks like the Syrians are already ducking on this. Apparently some dipshit let loose without knowing what he was doing and everyone is extremely sorry now. :D

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- A Syrian official says the downing of a Turkish military plane Syria has said was operating in its airspace was an accident, and not a hostile act against its neighbor.
Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdisi told Turkish news channel A Haber on Saturday that Syria had exerted its "sovereign right" against an "unknown" aircraft violating its air space.
Makdisi was quoted as telling the channel that Syria did not realize the plane was Turkish, and "there was no enmity against Turkey."
He said Syria was helping Turkey find the missing pilots and recover the wreckage.
Turkish officials said Saturday that Turkey was contemplating retaliatory steps, but did not elaborate.

I would have no problem whatsoever with this escalating to war, I think someone has to step up and put an end to it. Syrian forces are shelling civilian towns, raping children, and all kinds of disgusting acts against humanity. Good for NATO if they grow some balls on thos one.

Sure, if you sit in Kalamazoo, Michigan you couldn't give a fuck if a war breaks out halfway around the world.

Let's fuel the industry a bit. Make some fucking money.

War is never the answer Matt . And we can't rely on what the West propaganda machine spins out . Most of it is bullshit . The region is unstable because we made it that way . A game is playing out here , one that could prove deadly for the human race . We MUST stop the war mentality ! War for profit is pure evil . We can't continue illegal wars without constitutional approval . The endless invading of soverign nations and the war mentality must stop .

Yeah, and you can sit wherever you are and not care about the syrian children getting buttfucked while their mother is gang raped and murdered. Theres already a war there and its not a fair fight, its a bully trying to hold onto power. Drop the hippie bullshit and think about how else the Syrian people can survive.

I agree that war is not a good answer, but its already a war. The people called for al assad to step down, so he called in the attack helicopters and mortars. I understand the reluctance to escalate it, but these people need help. Its not propaganda, its war crimes. My pakastani friend who has family in Syria haant been able to contact them for weeks because their town is pinned down by well armed professional soldiers killing indiscriminately. Im not a war monger by any means, but at some point someone has to help these people out.

This guy knows, we are at fault as well.. We have been fighting for control of the middle east for a long time. If we take Syria and Iran we can call it a day but Russia and china don't want us getting any closer.

Its wrong to not help someone in need, simple as that. Yeah we'd benefit from it and probly set up a puppet government... but so what? Is your distaste for american foreign policy greater than your distaste of civilian slaughter?

If anyone knows how else to stop al assad and his minions, im all ears

Both sides are at fault, but the u.s is fueling the opposition so Assad can look like the bad guy. Russia and china keep backing him up so the middle east isn't taken over by the west. While over here we get headlines about the massacre that is all caused by Al Assad when in reality most of it is by NATO, UN Troops, and the Free Syrian Army. Just a couple weeks ago i heard on the news that Al Assad was using children as shields on there cars but when Israel did the same thing they got no media coverage. Israel is as fucked as Syria, not in terms of anarchy but in terms of "bad things they did"

Absolutely right. This one's a really shitty one and it will probably get uglier still.

But calling for war doesn't help very much in this case. There's just too much shit involved. What if we get a major clusterfuck in the region with the russians involved? You think that that would help syrian children?
