Everyone is a little hypocrite, the going to church tradition just makes it more apparent in some. Anyway, this is not a typical black thing at all... I was raised in a protestant family and went to church every week against my will until I was around 14 or 15. As a kid it was mostly against my will because it was so freaking boring though. Sitting there sunday morning on that wooden bench for almost an hour was so unbearable boring it became the most dreadful hour of the week for me I actually wish there were some fanatical people dancing (although I would probably have found that too weird in my juvenile years as well to be honest ) I love those extreme vids that roam the youtube though (climax is around 4:05!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jgv6BS5jP4"]The Best Praise Breaks On The Planet! - YouTube
Truth. Sometimes are contradictions are the most interesting thing about us. Also truth, I went until I was 16 or 17. There were parts of church that I liked, though. The sermon, and after service we had coffee hour. And I liked a lot of the people at my church, even had a fondness for some of the weird 'lame' peeps. The routine parts of the service were worse then a dentist's waiting room though. And fuck those pews; why does God want your ass to sleep, again? I have a white friend that was a (likewise forced) Southern Baptist growing up - from what she said, those churches are way scarier for unbelievers.

The church I go to is non-denominational and holds their service at an elementary school. They have a rock band that plays during the service, too. The structures of the songs have gotten a lot less cliche as time has worn on. The messages are very good actually. Not your typical religious church thing. Definitely wise lessons to incorporate into one's spiritual life. Some cool people there, too. In fact, my former fake friend actually seems to have stopped going to it. Which makes me feel more comfortable now, to be honest. If you've ever heard of Antioch Church, you should check them out. They have plenty of church plants. It's good that you know God. While it looks like your parents won't be open to pulling you out of church completely, you should try convincing them that you want to go to another one.
Christian rock sounds awful as far as I've heard. And they have whole seperate music festivals of it, I've heard quite a bit. Some gospel from the hand of Johnny Cash on the other hand... I can really enjoy that. I guess it's mainly in the sound for me personally.
I've only heard one exception: Live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_nImUzRv0w"]Live - Heaven - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3KrGI3Yxd8"]LIVE OPERATION SPIRIT - YouTube
Exception? For me it's the perfect example! That kind of rock makes me instantly puke regardless the message. It sounds so lame, boring and unoriginal to me. Nothing to like for me.
Yeah, I see where you're coming from. I'm quite picky about sound myself. I really dislike the stuff that's played on Christian rock radio, but hearing this band play live is a whole nother thing. A lot of the songs they've written themselves, and some of the covers they play sound much better than the originals. Especially when they get a good drummer that does all these super cool fills. Sometimes they use bongos, too. haha I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to listen to their studio recordings, but hearing them play live is perfect for the occasion and really adds to the service.
Second song is indeed one of the best things I've heard of them Of course when I shit all over a band it can be possible they did a good song or two I am always much more tolerant when I'm at a live performance. Although where it comes to gospel like music I mainly enjoy folky stuff. Well, and some rasta of course :2thumbsup:
I could definitely go for a service that plays "Jamming" by Bob Marley. But of course, I can still worship the Lord with that song and others on my own time.
I was raised Southern Baptist. Even tho' I no longer go to church, I have been to a lot of different churches (different denominations) even after I was "grown". Personally, I do not prefer the get up and shout and dance and holler type services...so I understand where you come from there, Jay hasBeauty. I'm white, but have been to a few black churches, and loved their music so much (hey, at the risk of sounding racist, the white churches don't even compare in any way to the richness of the music I've heard at black churches)! One of the reasons I don't go to church now is that I know too many people in my little area, and guess I would need to find a SMALL church where I don't know anybody, cause I have a Real Hard Time even pretending to put up with the so-called christians where I know the ones in charge, especially when they want to judge me and I would NEVER do stuff that I know they do. I also do NOT agree with many of the things that they want to preach now - such as anti-gay, anti-abortion, and HOW I should vote! For the past I don't know how many years I worship in my yard, and well, everyday I talk to God/pray. However, I do understand that at your age, you don't really have the say-so that you WILL have when you get a little older, and that you basically have to listen to and do what mama says. I'd say try to just enjoy the music and let some of the stuff go in one ear and out the other...particularly when it comes to the hypocrites. Good luck.
Well, not much beats gregorian chants in an authentic medieval church for me where it comes to the richness in church music. But yeah, they skipped that in protestant services and it is also less impressive in a less authentic building already I really dig it though, I would voluntarily sit in a church where a choir sings those chants nowadays. Of course I understand in the US there are little of such churches and probably also not much gregorian choirs...
As far as down in southern US, I would be willing to bet A LOT there are, in fact, NO such churches singing gregorian chants. I think I saw something like that when I watched the funeral of Ted Kennedy on TV. Is that similar to what you speak of, Asmodean? I actually enjoyed watching it, and nobody I knew could believe I was interested in watching the whole thing. I don't know why...it was a funeral, spoken in (?)Latin (I think anyway) much of the time, but I still found myself glued to the tube and sort of uplifted by it all...is that strange?
