I second this....but then what about the unfit parents though? it would work for good parents but some people shouldn't be parents therefore they wouldn't be good teachers, unfortunatly. lol

When I first read this post I thought what a lame ass idea. By the time I was finished reading the OP I'm thinking this just might fly!!

When I was in school about a thousand years ago there were several teachers in my HS who would have done the school district a favor by resigning. Unfortunately in my case one of them was a History teacher of mine. I passed the course but I doubt if I learned jack shit.

After what I've seen of the Public School System the last 30+years I would love to see some serious in your face accountability for teachers. It wouldn't have to be jail time tho. Just hold back a few weeks pay or a month or two. After all in the private sector if you don't earn your keep you are gone.

so wait if i skip my mom goes to jail ? .. well here thats not true ,... I go to court and i have to sighn a contract after a certain amount of times saying that i will go to school .. THAT law is screwd up ! i dont agree with it considering i wont even USE half the crap i learn in school anyways ... but that is just messed up that there are other places where the parents of the students go to jail ??? its not the parents fault its not the kids fault either .. its the governments fault for shoving crap down our throats for 12 years .. More than that if you want to be a "productive citizen" meaning productive slave to the system ...

Apparently it's some sort of Canadian law that you HAVE to go to school too, but I never see anything being enforced on parents, just suspensions or alternative programs for the student. I am in limited understanding of this US law only for the reason that you can't really punish kids the same in schools anymore (let's face it: out of school suspensions don't work). Maybe they feel that if they put pressure on the parents, the kids will get the pressure passed onto them causing them to stop skipping. It IS a little bullshit that they're acting like it was the fault of the parent(s) who aren't normally with their kid at school time.

I'm pretty sure that whatever retarded dipshits might have made a law that sends parents to jail for kids truancy, it couldn't be considered negligence, even, to expect a child to get to school by whatever means has been arranged, from bus to short walk, even for young kids, alone.

You can walk out of a school, it's not a prison.....

For people too stupid to go to school, it's their minimum wage asses that will be flipping burgers..... you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. And there might be some horses that find better water on their own, but either way, the parents should not be responsible, so long as they make reasonable efforts-basically, if they're not getting drunk with their kids during the school day.

I think it's pretty harsh to send parents to jail when their kids skip school.
Having said that, as a teacher myself i resent this remark :
Wth?? So because little Jenny decides she's too cool for school, the teachers are responsible?
Of course there are lame teachers in every school, but there are also great teachers who work their asses off to have their students succeed in life, and they should be held responsible because the kids refuse to learn anything?
I'm the first person to admit there are lots of things that don't work in our current school system, but it's the only one we've got at the moment, and i get tired of hearing people say that the teachers are horrible people who get a generous salary for doing nothing in their class but harassing fantastic kids.
I make very little money, i work 40+ hours a week, i absolutely love my students and want nothing but for them to have a happy life, i don't only teach them english, i also get to teach them to be polite and to respect people because most parents don't do so, i don't count the hours i spend dealing with students' personal issues that are not related to school...
And with that, if u ask most people what they think of school, they'll say it sucks big time. But when they have kids they have zero problem considering school as a cheap baby-sitter. So yeah of course it's a problem when kids don't want to go, because suddenly parents are faced with a problem they didn't expect to have.

Now to come back on the original post, what is your solution ?
U mentionned suspension, detention and saturday school. Suspension is absurd, u're not going to kick a kid out of school because he doesn't go to school. Detention and saturday school means u need teachers to watch the kids, which means money, and (at least here with the ridiculous budget for education) the government doesn't have that money. Back then it was possible, but it isn't anymore.
So as for now school can't provide a solution.

Again i'm not saying that parents should be sent to jail (that's ridiculous), but frankly, i think when a kid decides to skip school the parents should start communicating with their kid. Maybe stand up for what they think of school, be responsible, decide to take the kid out of school if he's old enough to work, or go for homeschooling..?
Kids do not know what's good for them. They can't foresee their future past next summer, they need guidance, and i think the primary guidance should come from their parents.

Has anyone really gone to jail over this yet? Sounds really stupid. Good way to create more poverty after the parent lose their jobs for going to jail.

It seems to me like everything is the parents fualt now , even teaching your kid to fight and defend themselfs is wrong . But honestly what can these parents do there already at work . But i do agree punish the kid not the parent its a waste of time and waste of resourses . And this really proves these law makers arent thinking , If the kids parents are in jail whos making sure the kids are going to school ?
