Road Tripping across the U.S.

So a couple friends along with my two dachshunds are headed in our first road trip starting from MIchigan ending in Oregon with set Pit stops in Colorado, and Washington. I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations on places to camp, whether they are hidden gems or known doesn't matter. Swimming Holes would be incredible or if anyone knows of any communes on the way that host we'd love to be apart of that too!

wow what part of MI are you from? i ended up moving to florida couple years ago, i was from lapeer. i know in mendocino country,ca there are 2 free campgrounds that are ok, dunlop campground on highway 20, and eggtank (whatever it is) not sure where that one is though
