I figured that if there were fellow planters on HF I could find them here..
If there are, where do you plant and how much?

I haven't yet, but I've been saving up a lot of seeds and have a lot of plants I'm planning on planting into a trail nearby.

I certainly appreciate what squirrels do for our leafy friends, but I guess I should've been more specific. I meant thousands of trees every day to replace softwood lumber logging forests. It's a popular form of seasonal employment for hippies in Canada, Scotland, Australia and a few other places.

    sorry re-post.

No I've never heard of that as a job. I'm in the US though. Who pays you to do that?

because of sustainable forestry projects logging companies have to plant a certain number of trees for every tree they cut (otherwise we'd be all out of forest like Europe), so we pay crackheads to pick pinecones, then they grow little trees from them in giant warehouses called tree nurseries and the logging companies hire contractors who hire mostly hippies and crazy university/college students (like me) to plant them.

If you live in the US and use paper or live in a house, then you've probably benefitted in some way from this, since most of your softwood lumber comes from Canada.

I just tried my first contract of treeplanting this summer and I'd recommend it to any of you who are young and in good shape and making anything under 20$/hour. It has been one of the most intense experiences of my life and it feels like it must give you some damn good kharma. I just planted a little over 80,000 trees.

That's awesome...I want to look into that! I don't usually live in a house and try not to use much paper, but I try to make up for the consumption of those who are extremely unconscious.

You should totally look into it. If you're already used to not living in a house, it shouldn't be too bad. I feel like its been really good for my mind and I know its been really good for my body. Perfect hippie job :)

I wish I could go out and plant trees in the forest. My favorite tree to gather seeds from around here are black locust...

Just did my rookie year in the lakes district of central BC, and its been killer experience on the whole. Good exercise, good company, good money too. Excellent way to fund some summer adventures. Better than fruitpicking too IMHO :2thumbsup:

planting trees is an extremely small part of my job. 11 this year, hopefully we can get twice that next year but it's too early to say at this point.

I go around collecting seeds and grow 'em in pots until they're saplings and then find a nice spot for them. There are tons of Japanese maples growing around where I live because of that.

oh god...worst job in the world..i know lots of people who planted in their college days to pay for tuition

all they did was complain lol...very very hard work you need to be absolutely top physical condition and ready to work in hot sticky weather while sleeping in camp conditions that would make a hobo keep walking to the next town

and to top it off youre basically feeding half the provinces mosquito and black fly population with your blood

I've never planted trees as a job, but I've sponsored the planting of trees through donations to charities and also given gifts of trees that were planted in honor of the recipient.

When we bought our current home on 1.5 acres, there were only 5 mature trees on the property. We buy trees from the Arbor Day Foundation every season (twice a year) and also save trees that grow naturally in our yard by replanting them at more suitable locations.

well it's easy to plant one tree. The hard part is planting thousands of them very quickly and maximizing the efficiency of every movement. That takes a lot of knowledge and experience, most of which is gained through the first season or two of hell. I feel like it's a hell that's worth it, though.

I made more money than I would elsewhere (although probably not enough considering the difficulty of the work) and it also made me feel very good mentally, physically, and I bet it topped off the fuck out of my kharma

Nice to see someone else here who just got through the first year. Shit was fucking tough. I've been doing the same sort of thing since I finished, funding partying and festivaling and travelling. I want to try planting in BC as well. I hear it's slower work due to the land, but a bit more interesting and higher pay.
