Here is a short tutorial I typed up a while back. It's how *I* learned.. The key to this is to take your time and go slow. You learn how to control your butt and sphincter muscles. While taking your time at the beginning is very important, I can say that for myself it came very naturally. Your finger is sooo small that it's really almost nothing. With a little lube you should probably be able to get your pointer finger in there within 60 seconds of massaging the area and putting a little pressure. Don't force it.
