It's my own acronym for Something Big Out There, and I was using it somewhat tongue in cheek to describe my sense that there is more to all this than meets the eye. A group that I take fellowship with uses the term "Great Mystery" instead of God in prayers and other references.

Aspies tend to write long rambling posts too..:)

    Probably due to information overload..

I keep cutting my posts into small chunks.. to try to keep them readable..

    Maybe I should write a book..:)[/Quote]

When we finish our dialogue, lets submit it for publication. lol.

I have the feeling that for many people religion provides a canned set of formulas to spare them the effort of thinking while they go about their lives and spend their time in fun pursuits. I was bothered by the Apostle's Creed that was said at every Sunday service in the Methodist Church. I said to my girlfriend "I'm not sure I can continue to go here. I don't believe this stuff." She said, "I don't pay any attention. It's just a lot of words." And so it is for a lot of normal people--soothing words that seem to mean something, but normal people don't give them a second thought. They symbolize eternal truths wrapped up in a neat bundle of doctrines. Jesus was the Son of God, Begotten not made, born of a virgin, etc. What does it all mean? Who knows? Most Christians just believe it. Or at least say it. To me, religion or spirituality is a process of becoming--the process being more important than the end result.

I purport to have dedicated my life to Jesus as my teacher and role model, but like you, it doesn't matter to me whether or not He existed. I think the best evidence indicates that He did exist, but didn't do or say most of the things attributed to Him. It doesn't even particularly matter to me whether or not God exists. The ideas and ideals are what's important. From a practical standpoint, they are God. Buddhists don't spend their time worrying about whether or not the Buddha existed. Any good zen master would say the Buddha didn't exist, or if you meet him on the road, kill him. Of course, Christians who believe Paul's notion that Jesus died for our sins have problems thinking He might not have existed. But again, it's the metaphor that's important. So I agree with you, and commend you for working it out so insightfuly.

Virgin birth is a metaphor for purity of spirit. Meaning.. the Spirit of Jesus was not defiled by the teachings of ignorant men. Like the pope.. for example.. who is teaching things that he doesn’t understand.. and misleading people.. and making lots of money from his fraudulent teachings. While the teachings of Jesus are pure.. uncorrupted. He doesn’t get in bed with (the ideas of) men.. (metaphorically speaking).

St Paul wrote: “I AM AGAIN IN CHILDBIRTH PAINS UNTIL CHRIST IS FORMED IN YOU”

This is a good example of – BIRTH – being use metaphorically..

The best way to find to meaning of these words is to do a word search of the Bible and see how the writers were using the word – VIRGIN. For sure.. they weren’t using the word in any literal sense..

The idea that Jesus was the Son of God originates in the Psalms.

“I myself have said, 'You are gods, And ALL of you are sons of the Most High.”
    Psalms 82:5

Jesus quoted the Psalms when the Jews attacked him for blasphemy..

“Once more the Jews lifted up stones to stone him. Jesus replied to them: "I displayed to you many fine works from the Father. For which of those works are you stoning me?" The Jews answered him: "We are stoning you, not for a fine work, but for blasphemy, even because you, although being a man, make yourself a god."

Jesus answered them : "Is it not written in your Law, `I said: "You are gods"'? If he called `gods' those against whom the word of God came, and yet the Scripture cannot be nullified, do you say to me whom the Father sanctified and despatched into the world, `You blaspheme,' because I said, I am God's Son?"

    IJohn 10:31

It means “son” in the Spirit.. not a “son” in the flesh. The men that wrote the Bible understood that words and genes both serve to pass on bits of information from one generation to another. Concealed among the words of the Bible is the Spirit of the Christ. Anyone who studies enough.. with pure intentions will discover it.. because it will become alive in them. William Blake is a good example of someone who has taken on board the Christ Spirit. It’s a mix of Love and Anger.

Jesus is a man who must have studied the Bible books for many years.. reading the words of Moses.. Solomon.. Isaiah.. Amos.. etc.. again and again.. until he had taken on board both their hearts and minds. In Jesus all the ancient prophets were reborn in a single person. The words and ideas of the ancient prophets were the - FATHER - of his Spirit.. and he was their SON.. in a spiritual sense. Jesus was.. as the gospel of John puts it.. THE WORD MADE FLESH

So many people never even think of this.. but it’s important to always remember the writers of the Bible were poets.. so their words shouldn’t be taken literally.. as the church does.. then.. all we get is nonsense.. which is probably why your church sermons made you feel bored.

The Bible.. when read with understanding.. is never boring.. once i started reading it.. I couldn't put in down for 5 years.. I read it constantly.. day and night. Not out of any sudden religoius conversion.. but because it puzzled me.. and engaged my mind like playing some fantastic game with the writers of cat and mouse.

    --
Isaiah wrote: “No! Insolent people of a stammering tongue, you will see a people too deep in language to listen to, without your understanding.”

    -
Yes.. the language is DEEP.. I had never come across such great minds before.. and I had just finished studying the ideas of Einstein. I found the Bible much more difficult.

The men who wrote the Bible left me in awe. They used language in a way that I had never seen it used before. At first the book appears to contradict itself.. but this is because ambiguity is used to keep the reader thinking.. and wondering.. what does this REALLY mean?

Poor translations didn't help.. it is ofen necessary to cross check other translations to get the original meaning.
    ---

“A wise person will listen and take in more instruction, and a man of understanding is one who acquires skilful direction, to understand a proverb and a puzzling saying, the words of the wise persons and their riddles.” - Proverbs 1.5

    ---
St Paul explains this poetic approach to our god-like nature.. like Jesus.. in this verse (Acts 17).. he refers back to the poet David’s Psalm 82:5.. “all of you are sons of God”....

“…for them to seek god, if they might grope for him and really find him, although , in fact, he is not far off from each one of us. For by him we have life and move and exist, even as certain ones of the poets among you have said, `For we are also his progeny.”

Seeing, therefore, that we are the progeny of God, we ought not to imagine that the Divine Being is like gold or silver or stone, like something sculptured by the art and contrivance of man.” - Acts 17:23 -29

Again.. we hear St Paul warning us not to get in bed (with the ideas and teachings) of men. Then.. some idiot translater of the KJV.. has translated St Paul's words.. men with men.. as homosexual.. instead of seeing the metaphorical use. So millions of Christians have misunderstood what St Paul is really talking about..

Sometimes.. I feel like tearing my hair out IN FRUSTRATION.. People can be so stupid.. and distort the teachings of this great book.. BRINGING IT DOWN TO THEIR OWN LEVEL OF STUPIDITY.. WHY???

    POOR TRANSLATIONS MAKE ME MAD..!!!

The King James version is full of such translation errors..

This is a video I uploaded about the meaning of the - Son of God

Yes.. yes.. yes.. spirituality is a process of becoming.. There is no end.. only perpetual change..

It is a gradual process of transformation..

I put together a short film from bit a pieces I borrowed from other films.. to better express this idea..

Proof of God comes from perseverance in daily meditation.. an hour or more can give rise to some sublime experiences.. of inner realities that are mostly hidden from our everyday consciousness..

We discover something in our selves.. which is greater than ourselves..

By meditation we can experience the ONENESS that the mystics have always spoken about..

This is represented artistically 2 minutes into this short film.. when the individual becomes one with God..

    THE TRANSFORMATION

I call IT – (GOD) - the Primary Field.. I came up with the Primary Field idea while reading Einstein.. I was wondering were ENERGY came from.. and Albert’s work on IMAGINARY ENERGY gave me an idea.. that there must exist a field of potential energy.. that acts as a source..

Mystics.. like Buddha and Christ.. have known this for thousands of years.. so.. I guess.. i'm a bit slow on the up-take..:)

“A young female student accused Jung of being an atheist. Jung was confused and asked the student where she had gotten that idea. The student paraphrased a quote she had read in which Jung said he didn't believe God existed.

Jung smiled and said "Dear girl, rest easy, when we have a relationship to a particular thing or experience with it - belief/faith ceases to be a factor.

The truth is this, I have had the experience of being gripped by something that is stronger than myself, something that people call God. So, I will never say that I believe that God exists....

I must say I know God exists!"

Having read the post I have to say they have not made me change my mind. I have worked most of my life in the science field, worked with hundreds of science oriented people. I see myself as a strong Atheist, and I am the norm in my working peer group. If you take a look at the surveys on NSF members you will see over 95% are non-religious. I don’t personally know a science oriented person who is religious. I will keep watching, but as of now I agree with Steven Hawking in there is no need for god in our universe.

Most of the science oriented people you listed came from the era (1930) when social brainwashing was common place. Several are listed in their bio as preachers with a follow up on science. One was more oriented in UFOs and none fall in the Hawking range of thought.

There is concrete data that suggests god exists at the very least as a linguistic integer representing a wide range of human endeavor. In it's most accessible form, god is that which is invoked.

Words are symbols of conditions and word god describes some experiential conjugation.

I really didn't know that a popular idea was considered scientific because it is popular with scientifically oriented persons. All this name dropping does nothing whatsoever for the cause of scientific evidence.

What about at the very most?

Do you ever read your own posts?

    I didn't think so.

I guess you had concrete proof for the existence of god after all.:juggle:

Just suggesting the most immediate and simple explanation.

I don't get it, you have indigestion?

    of course

    Then you are mistaken.

    Did you care to rebut?

That is, scientific, reproducible evidence of god.

Go to the dictionary and look up the word god.

    God exists by definition.

    Then you are in agreement?

Self denial is an improper use of denial.

If you wish to question the existence of god scientifically then definition, a consistent unit of measure, is the place to start. The question, does god exist is meaningless in the face of the demonstrable evidence that god exists by definition. Each entry in the definition of the word god represents an experiential conjugation.

So how would you define god?

There are many conjugations but all of them are elements of the human psyche.

I would also define god as the most fundamental impulse applied to our relationships we all have with the world.

That is we are devoted to our good, (our god), and we apply ourselves in every instance, to have it.
