Howdy Folks! Seed campers has begun setting up the site for the July 19-22 Mid-Atlantic Rainbow Family's Summer Regional on private land in Accokeek, Md. This site has many acres of beautiful hardwood forest, meadows, springs, and creeks and is an in-holding of Piscataway National Park. We are within walking distance of the Potomac River and the Accokeek Park-n-Ride metrobus stop. (We encourage Family on the land to metro into D.C. for upcoming protests including the 7/17 Rainbow Hands for Peace Around the White House, and 7/20 Rally to Legalize Cannabis and Liberate Dreadlocks Culture.) The address for the gathering site is 1126 Apple Valley Rd., Accokeek, Md. Parking space is limited so please drop off your gear at the site, and relocate vehicles to the Park-n-Ride lot (shuttle arrangements can be made if desired). Folks may arrive early, but if you do come early please be self-reliant and be prepared to be put to work occasionally. Directions from the D.C. Beltway/I-495/I-95: Take Maryland exit 3 (Md-210) south towards Indian Head. Straight through about 8 or 9 lights (about 15 miles), then turn right at the Farmington Road light. Drive about 1.5 miles and at the stop sign turn right again on Bryan Point Road. Drive about 0.25 miles and turn left on Apple Valley Road (this is a dirt road.) 1126 is the driveway with the drift-wood gate. Directions from the Accokeek Park-n-Ride: Turn right out of the parking lot onto Livingston Road (Md-373). Go about 0.25 mile, going straight through the intersection with Md-210, then make first right on Biddle Road. Immediate left onto Bryan Point Road. Apple Valley Road is on the left in about 0.75 mile. 1126 is the driveway with the drift-wood gate. Drums and other musical instruments encouraged! Bring food and good vibes to share!! Peace & Love, yall!!!
It was a great success! Thank yous to all who made it!! I've even decided to focalize another Mid-Atlantic Regional for Aug. 30-Sept. 12 with seed camp starting earlier, and clean up staying longer. This will be a historic event if we can pull off this Mid-Atlantic Rainbow Family Fall Regional within Washington D.C. city limits. (I have a "backcountry use permit" for Fort Dupont Park in Southeast DC.) http://www.************/events/411917722188620/
why was it on private land? there are definately usable regional spots in that region on OUR national forest lands
Our local Mid-Atlantic Rainbow Family (Md/Va/Dc/Eastern Wv) has not been very strong as of late. I think most folks involved with MARF are more comfortable on private land, as there is a perception that a certain threshold of gathering size is required to take over public lands. Insufficient involvement has resulted in the MARF using private land for our regionals for as long as I can remember. I'm trying to organize folks to take public NPS land in D.C. for a fall regional, but I'm now thinking it needs to be canceled due to lack of interest and too many other gatherings going on elsewhere. BTW, The nearest national forest is 2.5 or 3 hours drive from D.C., so that's a big driving burden for the population center of our region.
