Julius Caesar. not gay, but he appears to have been into men as well. so maybe bi. although, it's hard to tell by our standards.
Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg. Also, I think Quentin Crisp was totally remarkable. Oh, almost forgot Harvey Milk! :2thumbsup: QP
Matthew Shepard. He would have made the world a better place for all (had he been allowed to live longer). :sunny: QP
Oscar Wilde, brilliant writer and intelligent man. Freddie Mercury, great singer. RuPaul, amazingly kind and smart man. Zachary Quinto, brave and fantastic actor.
2 awesome choices! I love Wilde and Mercury. :2thumbsup: I thought of a few more: 1. Auden (brilliant poet) 2. May Sarton (I can't get enough of her insightful journals) 3. Gertrude and Alice. 4. Montgomery Clift (amazing actor) 5. Andy Warhol. QP
Yes totally agree with Rupaul and Oscar Wilde! Rupaul is such an inspiration. He encourages tolerance and communication, helping eachother. Something we could all draw inspiration from, gay or not.
My school friend who didn't 'come out' till she was in her late twenties. She also fell in love with an American and had to go through so much red tape to get her partner to the UK. I'm not really a fan of 'role models' of any description - how does being gay make you a 'role model'? But, a gay person I am proud to know and respect - is my friend.
zackie achmat, political activist in south africa, at a time when the government had been convinced (or pretended to be convinced)that AIDS medication was a conspiracy to promote drug dependancy and were, in fact, highly toxic, it was also policy to deny that AIDS was related to HIV, and to prosecute groups which educated people about combating the epidemic as well as denying mothers MTCT prevention treatment. the true cure, they claimed, was vitamin pills and locally grown vegetables, particularly garlic. i think they might have been thinking of vampires. (although anti-retroviral medication was, of course, available for the extremely wealthy), Zackie set up a network to smuggle into the country the anti-retroviral drugs necessary to prolong the lives of HIV victims (200,000 victims a year in SA), he also refused, on principle, to take any himself, despite being HIV positive, until they were readily available to the public at large. for smuggling these necessary drugs into the country to be distributed on the streets he was actually reccomended to the Hague for crimes against humanity, such was the anger of the government at his actions. in fact, just to show how much they hated him, this is their vision of the nature of his imprisonment included in the recommendation that they sent to the international court: "permanent confinement in a small white steel and concrete cage with bright fluorescent light on all the time to keep an eye on him, with wardens putting him out every day to work cultivating nutrient-rich vegetables" (the "cure" for AIDS, remember) "including when it's raining, in order for him to repay his debt to society, with the anti-retroviral drugs he claims to take administered daily under close medical watch at the full prescribed dose morning noon and night, without interruption, to prevent his faking that he's being treatment compliant, pushed if necessary down his forced open gullet with a finger, or if he bites, kicks and screams too much, dripped into his arm after he's been restrained on a gurney with cable ties on his ankles, wrists and neck, until he gives up the ghost on them, so as to eradicate this foulest, loathsome, unscrupulous and malevolent blight on the human race" at 13 he set fire to his school in order to get everyone out onto the streets to join anti-apartheid protests. he's spent a great deal of his time in prison, being beaten etc, as you'd expect. he was prominent in the anti-apartheid movement, founded the TAC, as well as the national coalition for gay and lesbian equality, prosecuted cases which led to the decriminalisation of sodomy and equal immigration status for same sex couples, ensured equal rights would be written into the constitution. has been described as the most significant activist in south African history since Nelson Mandela. if ever there could be a role model... also, wilde, whitman and the father of computing; Alan Turing. also peter tatchell. an LGBT activist from my own country.
