It's amazing that Americans can't understand what has happened in the last thirty years with the national debt, employment, the trade debt, and the economy. The GOP has always ALWAYS always been about advancing the benefits of the rich as far back as the Civil War. That war was about benefiting the corporations owned by the rich, and still very few even realize it. Since Ronnie Raygun was POTUS, the tax burden has been about lowering it for the rich and shifting it to the middle class. The republicans have created an aristocratic society in America. Less than 5% own more than 80% of everything. The taxes for the rich have gone from 90% in the 60's, to 35% today, and they are whining about that being too much. As a result, the national debt has gone from less than one trillion dollars in 1981 when the republicans took over the White House, to almost $16 trillion today. Ronnie Raygun almost tripled the national debt in eight years, from one trillion to $2.5 trillion. Then Shrub daddy almost doubled the national debt again in only four years, from $2.5 trillion to $4.5 trillion. Clinton(a democrat) balanced the budget and left office with a $300 billion annual surplus, which Shrub Jr. destroyed in only six months by giving millionaires $3 trillion in tax cuts that was just added to the national debt. With that and the Iraq war, Shrub Jr. doubled the national debt yet again from $5.5 trillion to over $11 trillion. And He is really responsible for even more because he destroyed the whole global economy in 2007, which the dems have been trying to dig us out of, only to be continually torpedoed by the obstructionist republican congress. The republicans stated goal, is to make Obama and the democrats FAIL at any cost, including the destruction of this country. And they've done it. They are destroying Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education, farm aid, food stamps for the poor, and all for the benefit of lower taxes for the rich. And the saddest part is that most of the morons that vote for the republicans don't benefit from it. They've been totally dumbed down by the fascist right wing propaganda machine. It's the same kind of propaganda machine that Joseph Goebbels used on the Germans for the nazis. And Americans have been fooled just like the Germans. The republican ideology is, "Our way, or the destruction of America.", just like the nazis did to Germany. And if you don't believe it, you've become just the way they want you.

BTW, paying off the national debt a $30 billion per month will take 1,500 years.

It'd actually be about 500 if somehow we wound up with a surplus of that amount starting tomorrow.

you forgot to factor in the interest on the debt, although rates have gone down since it was originally calculated. Still, 5,6 or 700, or a thousand years is a long time to be a slave to the national debt.
