Huge fire erupts at San Francisco Bay oil refinery "A huge fire has broken out at the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, California as more than 160,000 residents were being warned to stay indoors to protect themselves from the hazardous smoke. At least two large blazes erupted at the refinery sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air over the San Francisco Bay-area plant. Fire crews are fighting to contain the blaze, which erupted at 6.15pm, and can be seen for miles across the city. There have been no fatalities, one of the refinery workers was injured with non life-threatening burns. The cause of the fire is not yet known." Flames still burning but crews contain Chevron oil refinery blaze August 6, 2012 | 11:17 pm http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/08/crews-contain-chevron-oil-refinery-fire-richmond.html
Tragic to say the least. Anybody wonder why they had all those private firefightes handling it primarily? besides the fact that they where already on site. wouldnt it be best handled with the private and the public firefighters working together? pooling resources and all? idk just wondering is all. thanks for the story aeri
I lived within blocks of that refinery. Housing's surprisingly cheap! lol Saw it burn two or three times in the thirty+ years I lived inSF.
My original home-town. Was born in Richmond, back when it had the Kaiser Shipyards making warships. My dad was one of the thousands of workers who went to that place. Guess it is still heavy industry. Also interesting is how many stories about the US I don't hear about in the US. Have to get our news from the Daily Mail UK.
An agreement so that their fire doesn't tax the smaller local communities. And the particle matter is more inland than Oakland. Pretty much it is like having a wildfire nearby. So I sort of feel like I'm back home in the Denver area.
Not that old rag surely? It used to be a quality newspaper 20 or 25 years. Now it's just sensationalist and caters to the racist right wing nuts. The comments on the articles are shocking! Sometimes I can't read them as I seriously find them upsetting.
Agreed. It dosen't take much. Also I really hate to see something like this. The smog is already so bad out there. I have family in San Francisco so it hits close to home. Not that it should matter. This is bad for everyone.
Id be careful about what you read from the daily mail. They are extremely biased and a lot of their articles are very one sided. There's also been claims that some of their stories have no official evidence to back them up.. I stopped bothering with the daily mail after they bashed breastfeeding in public! Grrrr!
