So I just opened my local paper and was greeted by 4 smiling pigs on bikes, reminding me that whenever I am enjoying a little solitude in the woods I have to watch my back for these bloated morons. I hate the police so much, give me a break. It seems like every arrogant, stupid person in the world is drawn into law enforcement. In the eyes of the law I, like all drug users, am a drug addict who needs help by being arrested, beat up, thrown into a cold cell, threatened with jail, etc. It disgusts me so much that these fat swine are allowed into schools to spread their propaganda. Cops expect nothing but gratitude and respect but the moment they murder someone they don't want to take any responsiblity! But what I hate most is that everyone in my culture (white, middle-class) sucks up to these clowns. People are like dogs, getting little treats from the police masters in return for their subservience. It's so pathetic. They want us to inform on each other for money, creating a culture of fear where they are the heroes. Every time I look at a pig I feel like taking a shower.

Sorry I had to rant :)

I DO love and respect the police. There are bad ones; there are horrible ones; maybe most of them are bad ones.

But they are doing an essential community service, that is just as dangerous as fighting fires, and less reputable than being a garbage man.

Not only do they have to risk themselves against violent criminals, work for/against terrible lawmakers, on a seemingly futile mission, but they get relatively low pay and very little respect from the general population for doing it.

I can't think of a worse job to have; and while I do think the position draws more than it's share of megalomaniacs; there are also a lot of honest, good-meaning, civic-minded cops out there. And when you put it that way; they are also working against their dirty comrades and the reputation it brings them.

I don't think you could do anything more heroic than be a cop.

I feel that we need a society where we protect ourselves and each other rather than relying on the police to protect us. We never get to the roots of crime, instead we just hire more cops to make people's lives miserable. Everyday I hear about these idiots shooting another person, lying, cheating, stealing, harrasing people, hurting people, and no cop ever gets in trouble. But we're expected to respect them! yucckk...

This... would turn into chaos where the biggest guy with the most guns wins... everybody else would be dead.

Don't get me wrong, I hate cops and can't trust them as far as I can throw a truckload of doughnuts, but what you "feel we need" is not the answer either.

I'm speaking in general terms; I'm not advocating a lawless society. I simply believe that society needs to find better solutions to crime. We need to look at the roots of crime rather than trying to slap a bandaid on a problem. There's so much evil and corruption in society but we feel content to eschew responsibility and allow the authorities to make all of our decisions for us.

At the very least police need to be held accountable for all the crimes they commit. We should also end D.A.R.E. and other propaganda programs.

there are some cops that are attracted to the job because they want to serve their communities

others are complete assholes, just the worst kind of criminals who have found a way to commit crimes
against society and get away with it

I disagree with the notion that cops get less respect than garbage men.

maybe in the hipforums community, but in society at large they are idolized. how many tv shows are about the hero cops, how many are about the hero garbage men?

what politician wouldn't stand on a stage backed by a row of cops? how many would stand on a stage with garbage men?

many cops make lots and lots of money. even if the base pay is not high, they often get plenty of money from overtime, often doing things like manning a construction detail, where they just stand around

Yea everyone likes having the police tell they fuck you over screwing up your life for years to come.

Police don't protect the people, they follow orders from the capital. The capitial don't give a damn about any of us. Cops might be in it for the good intentions but never forget who you work for.

So do i. Most are far to comfortable in the current society and very unprepared and would most likely very very scared or killed if that were to happen. Most people are weak in that way.

If we had a society that protected themselves on the level i think you are thinkning, i bet you we would be in a civil war.

Those shows are about the criminals more than the cops. The cops are only the focus because everyone likes a happy ending and despite their obsession, want to see evil punished so they feel safe. How often do you see advertised a cop saving someone? Maybe in the opening sequence; but all the commercials are about the gruesome crimes or scary criminals.

Before Rescue Me, Denis Leary did a network show about cops called the Job, that was a darkly funny yet starkly serious show similar to the first season or two of Rescue Me, and it bombed.

Furthermore half of these detective shows portray beat cops as donut eating morons that are only good for fucking up evidence.
You have to work full time to get the overtime; and you are still technically on-duty. Protecting a conveinence store is a pretty easy (albeit ridiculously boring) job, sure; but that's only until some asshole robs it with a submachine gun.

I watch very little television these days, but any time I've seen cop shows, the cops have been the heroes.

there's maybe some movies from the 70's that show the clown cops crashing their cars in a chase

I suppose we could do a poll about how people feel cops are portrayed. I don't think it's necessary though. we disagree about how cops are portrayed

we're in agreement with "hooray for good cops" though

They are an endangered species I'm afraid...

..lots have jumped ship since the rise of the "high and tight" style militarization of police depts everywhere. Many of these new recruits are coming straight out of active duty in the the middle east.

    Officer Friendly's got PTSD...;)
