I just saw some photos on Der Speigel. Pussy Riot and another organization have been doing this kind of thing for years. They're the real deal. Punker activists. Very courageous.imo
Looks like there are going to many protests over the sentence. Already there were 70,000 petitions handed to the Russian embassy in Berlin. The Russian ambassador just went and dumped them all in the street! What is not understood by many, was that their actions in the Cathedral were not against the Church, but against Putin. They sang a prayer, asking the Virgin Mary to save them from Putin! What? You're not allowed to pray in church in Russia? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/15/pussy-riot-rallies-supporters-mobilize_n_1778220.html
Before protests, russia would have done nothing. After protests, russia will do nothing, while wishing they had originally done nothing. Yes, inciting religious hatred is an interesting charge for singing a prayer and dancing, even if it was an anti-putin-prayer and a bawdy dance. Still, russia has never been hesitant to criminalize religion before this, why should they worry now?
If this had happened in the US or most other Western countries, they would have probably been arrested for disorderly conduct, trespassing, things like that, and would have probably just been given a fine or short jail sentence. The fact that these chicks got 3 years is just proof that the whole trial and resulting sentence was politically motivated. Putin is just another warmed-over Soviet dictator that allows more of the 'free market' than his predecessors. Personally, he scares the hell out of me
He's "ex-KGB"....... like that's even a thing. When putin and co. got in control, they essentially set up soviet russia, only much more profitable and even more corrupt.
Today they were found guilty by the Russian court but a sentence has not been handed down yet... The prosecutors are asking for a three year sentence. I hope that clarifies things. Sorry I jumped the gun there!
This is the last thing Im writing here because I am learning again how to live without internet... so no more writing here neither lol so: I wish all the light and love to your souls and that you will be able to spread some more peace in this world, have a nice life and good luck on your mission:sunny:
that was my point it was that the government tortures poeople in general. I never said its okay to disrespect religion.
I'd like to add a very poignant quote from Pussy Riot as was included in their closing statement. "in this closing statement, I would like to describe my firsthand experience of running afoul of this system. Our schooling, which is where the personality begins to form in a social context, effectively ignores any particularities of the individual. There is no “individual approach,” no study of culture, of philosophy, of basic knowledge about civic society. Officially, these subjects do exist, but they are still taught according to the Soviet model. And as a result, we see the marginalization of contemporary art in the public consciousness, a lack of motivation for philosophical thought, and gender stereotyping. The concept of the human being as a citizen gets swept away into a distant corner." Kind of scary when you think about it. This is where the U.S. is .. and where we're heading.
