I have always admired Elliott Smith. I even got to see him live once and treasure the memories. It's so sad how his life ended.

A few months ago I saw some homemade videos posted on youtube where he covers Beatles songs, and my jaw literally dropped at how good they were. He injected his own emotions into the performances.

Lately I have been listening to lots and lots of his music, almost as if I am rediscovering him. Anyone else love Elliott? He was a musical genius.

Quite an amazing songwriter, but I am not really big into his music for some reason.

However, if you like that type of songwriting, you would probably also enjoy Alex Chilton's songwriting, too. Alex Chilton was the lead singer for the band Big Star, and their Third album is one most depressive, melancholy albums ever released. I am pretty sure that album had some influence on Elliot and his songwriting.

Yeah, I have read that Big Star was an influence on him. First heard of Alex Chilton thanks to the Replacements!
