Hello. Odd way to start a post but ive been going through a bit of an exestential crisis latly. (Lol) And i had the idea of living a nomadic type life where i lay low somewhere for months at a time, or how ever long it takes to ave enough money to just jump in a plane with enough pocket money to get me through a couple months in whatever country i land. Then when my visa expires or im broke just come back to another city, live in some shelter or whatever and start again. I think alaska would be a good place to start, from whqt ive heard you can get a job with decent pay for a cannery or something like that in a town in the middle of nowhere.... and pretty much have nothing to do with your money but save it. But how would you go about finding a job in a place youre not even sure when or how youll get to? There should be some travellers around her... any advice or feedback?
What im looking for is any experiance someone could impart on me of matters like finding work, what sort of places would be a good destination, economic means of travel, and the like.
well, i'm in Alaska. i'm not sure where you are, or if you're a US citizen. ALL canneries require documentation that you are allowed to work in the US (by law). realize that by this time of the year the summer canneries are slowing, as the salmon season is just about over. about the only place with consistent cannery work is Dutch Harbor, Alaska. it is only reached by boat or plane. not advisable to show up there without already having a job. if you want some under the table work, consider Anchorage. 'town in the middle of nowhere'? no. Anchorage is a quarter million people, the biggest city in the state, but the most likely place to start out.especially under the table work and finding some simple cheap housing. the hostels in town often have "winter communities" with cheap rent. and you may be able to hook some kind of gig out in the bush. but don't count in just showing up in some 'town in the middle of nowhere' and landing a job, except maybe as a stripper at the local bar. if there is any more help i can pass along, PM me or post again here.
Alaska really isn't the place to just pop in with nothing lined up . Many people every year go without thinking it through and end up with hardship . Make sure you have money to return to where ever you came from if you go. I would stick with Anchorage if you go . Because I don't think it's a wise move to go to a "middle of no where " place with not much money . Fishing , canneries , and crabbing is hard work and not all are cut out for it . And with the current bad economy everyone is looking for work . I advise you to do some real research before going. I would think there are other states that are better suited to start off with .
^^^ this is correct ! However there is a housing/hotel shortage and no where to stay . I'm hearing of people renting garages . And when winter sets in , it won't be a good place to be without shelter . But yeah their economy is booming . But unless you have oil field exp. or trade exp. probably not going to get hired . But it's building up , so there prob. will be other opp. Again reasearch is the key . Have something lined up BEFORE going , or at least enough money to get back home .
Thanks for the thoughtful replies. Yes, i am an american citizen. And i dont plan on leaving anytime soon. There some illness in my family and i have to stick around and take advantage of the time i have left. But, god forbid, when thats over i have no ties left to this place or any reason i can surmise to stick around. I did a but of travling recently and it inspired me. Ive grown up for as long as i remember never meshing well with my environment. The values i hold arent shared with any of the people around me and the values that theyve tried to instil in me either make me feel ill or i just find absurd. I suppose im meant to he another irish wanderer; either drifting until i drop, or hopefully until i find some place id like to settle. I picked alaska as a jumping off point because for some reason i have this silly fixation with the childish idea of freedom, and alaska seems to epitomize that to me. I suppose anchorage would be the best place to start off... to get my footing and ideally find oppertunities in the more rural envornment that id like. But ultimatly id like to keep moving, even if i have to stop for a few years here and there to backtrack or find a new way forward. Ill keep researching how id get a job or even get there, but its a matter of time. Im not really good at naviating google so if anyone knows somewhere online or whathaveyou that would be a good sourse of information id be grateful.
glad you posted again. yeah, Alaska allows for a lot of freedom. just don't get the mistaken notion that the person next door has the same idea of freedom as you do. it would be smart to get your feet wet in Anchorage. then once you're sick of the drug gang shootings, the freeways and the smog, you'll have a better idea of where you can fit in out of town. Alaska's not going anywhere. make it here when you're ready.
