Believe it or not, I've never been on a train. Well, come November that's about to change. I'm moving to Omaha. We'll probably fly into San Francisco and make our way there. We're going to take an Amtrak and have roughly a week to make it to our destination. Where would you stop for a short period of time that's along the way? I was thinking Reno, but that's for business purposes, Salt Lake, and Denver. Wwyd?

Be careful somewhere along the way you’ll pass through Dark Territory

I love trains :) I used the trains a lot when I was in NSW and Victoria earlier this year. I love the XPT! Might fly over again next year just to go on the trains :D

I've never been on a train either. All our trains here are commercial and industrial, no passenger trains. I think it'd be fun to go on a trip on one, though. I've also never been to any of those places or anywhere in that area, so I have no suggestions for you.

i grew up practically in the stations between sacramento and reno. my dad worked for the railroad most of his life, and i worked for them for a year myself.

the train from san francisco doesn't actually leave from san franciso. most likely an amtrak bus will take you across the bay bridge to where you will likely board number 6 in oakland. reno does have reasonable eating places within walking distance of the station. most are in casinos. i don't know if it actually stops there long enough to get off, go eat something, and get back on though, as the depot track in reno is also the main line so it seems unlikely the train would be allowed to sit there long enough for that. east of reno is high desert mostly until you get to ogden/salt lake. you may have a long enough stop there, but its been too long since i've been there to be able to tell you what to expect. i think the only long stop after that is omaha where you're headed.

We would be stopping for a day or two in Reno. I own a rental property there. We're familiar with the area.

I've been to all the aforementioned places. I just wondered if there was somewhere in between worth stopping.

  8. I love the train! We have a train that runs right down the coast and stops at every small town, group of houses and beach. I adore it! Enjoy your trip :groupwave:
