so i'm going out of my mind with boredom. i'm going back to uni in three weeks. i failed to get a proper job over the summer, only the same part time removal/volunteer stuff i usually do, so i don't have the money i hoped to by this point. the film i was planning to be working on for the next few weeks fell through. i am jobless, poor, and most of my friends have full time jobs in the week or have gone back to their respective universities/ colleges, so i'm more or less living for the weekend. i was planning to go to eastern Europe but now could only afford to do so if i stayed in 10+ dorms which, while fun in a group, i don't think i'd be so up for on my own. also, id more or less be scraping by on a minimum of food (and thats a little too much like term time for me) So im staying in the UK, i guess my question is; if you were fairly poor and wanted to go somewhere for about a week (anywhere in the UK, also ireland) on your own, where would you go? i'd be open to anything at this point, but cities and places where stuff is going on appeal to me more than countryside, although any change of scenery would be nice, Streatham not being the most stunningly beautiful area these scepter'd isles have to offer
Places to go: Yorkshire, Central London, West London Liverpool, Brighton, Plymouth, The valleys in Wales, Edinburgh, Scottish Highlands. Places to avoid: Preston, Bolton, Birmingham, Manchester, Southampton, South West, South, East and North London, Glasgow.
Can you be more precise about what you are looking for, how much you have to spend? How long do you want to be away?
If you have limited funds then I guess you go where you can walk or drive . If you had more money then you could visit my part of the world . You could see the grand cayon , the shoot out in Tubmstone at the ok carol , or the beaches and zoo in San Deigo . desert rat
Cornwall is stunning this time of year.. or for around £50/60 flight morocco ... If you like the city Brighton is the best I feel in the south..
maybe 4/5 days. maybe 150 pound, after that i'm eating into my overdraft, which i'd rather not do if possible, but it isn't a disaster. also, the next installment of my loan doesn't come in for a while, so i was essentially hoping to spend very little on accomodation etc. i think i'd prefer a place where there are museums things to see, maybe some history, a place where free things happen frequently, some bars and clubs you can visit alone and not get stabbed in the face, that sort of thing. but don't feel constrained by what i want, maybe if people just tell me what they'd do if they wanted to get away for a bit around the UK, it might give me some ideas, plus i'd like to hear
haha, everywhere i've ever lived is in "places to avoid", sounds like i'm gettin out just in time lol
yup, the more i think about it, the more it seems i'm just after somewhere like where i am now, but cheaper lol maybe i could try over in ireland, could even get across the channel for pretty cheap...
very true^^its getting more expensive. especially with the job losses. i find Amsterdam cheaper. although just for short stays. like a 3day break ..
Considered scotland at all? I know you said you dont like countryside, but I just spent an amazing month on the north west coast and isle of Lewis. Very isolated and beautiful...and can be very cheap to get a coach there from london (I paid about 30 for return tickets). I've heard good things about Edinburgh, too ...although havent been there myself. In Ireland, I'd recommend Cork or Galway, both smallish vibrant cities with a lot going on! (I'm not a huge fan of Dublin, sorry Jimmyjoe!! )
a rainbow family gathering is as cheap as can be, but I don't know if that's something that you would like couch surfing is also free Morocco sounded good to me if there's a place where you can camp and then take public transportation into a city, that might be a good option or maybe couch surf somewhere outside london, then travel into the city for the day
well, its not so much that I'm against countryside, as much as it is i'm just sick of being cooped up in familiar surroundings with nowt but my own company, and i'm not sure that would be vastly improved by being alone in the countryside, really i'm just looking for somewhere with distractions, so i can go back to my studies feeling refreshed and that.
Try Wwoofing? http://www.wwoof.org.uk/ if you havent heard of it. I seldom travel anywhere without doing a bit of that. I agree, being alone in the countryside for weeks wouldnt be much fun ...but wwoofing changes that. First of all, its cheap ...as you get free food and lodging. You also meet a wide range of local people, and if you're lucky, get to learn new skills etc ! Granted, thats quite a rosy picture of it, but its well worth checking out
