So I'm trying to help my girlfriend out with a Art History paper she is writing about "The World of Jacques Callot" by Daniel Howard and she is trying to translate some sentences from the bottom of one of Jacques Callot etchings and were having trouble figuring out what a certain letter or symbol is within a word.

I've attached the word we are trying to translate and if anyone can help to explain to me what the second and forth letter/symbol is and what it means to the word that would be great.

    Thanks :)

look i barely speak german, but that B thingy is used in the place of 'ss' by what i know, so aBaBins would be 'assassins' in german (not french) i think

On lit parfaitement "assassins" écrit en français, mais en écriture ancienne où il était fréquent de lier ensemble certaines lettres, comme, par exemple, l'esperluette (&). Cette écriture, bien évidemment désuète, risque de ne pas être comprise par certains Français d'aujourd'hui. En tous cas, il ne s'agit pas d'allemand (double s ß), le pluriel en s n'existe pas dans cette langue...

oiseaulys is saying that it is French written in an oldfashioned style they don't use now. So that's interesting.
