    Back in the old days.....

Errrr, cos that hasnt already happened?

Been hearing this argument from the 80s, most of the time from crusty old folks, who then a week later ask you to program their VCRs, then set their DVD players, then load apps for their Ipad

The fact is college entrance exams have been dumbed down, text books across the board are written below grade level and must include lots of pictures, grading scales have been devalued......

I do apologize for swearing and having to use the vernacular. But unfortunately it's getting to the point where you have to say "shit, damn, fuck, kiss my ass, etc" in order to get anyone interested in hearing what you have to say. When I find someone of reasonable intelligence I pratically have to slap myself to keep from passing out in disbelief.

    OK,
It's often been said that in order for evil to win all that is required is for good men to do nothing. Well I think that's wrong because good people are always trying to fight evil. What happens is more often than not the brain dead refuse to listen and choose to live in denile. The excuses they can produce to justify doing nothing is beyond a doubt without limits. Unfortunately we're quickly becoming not just the most marginally illiterate society in the history of mankind but also the most unskilled. In layman's terms a bunch of morons.

There is no substitute for good old fanshioned hard work and self-discipline. And in this regard I'm not talking about making sure someone gets their ass out of bed by 6:30 am and down to the job site on time to put in 8 hours of back breaking work. What I'm saying is that everyone should try to adhear to a certain standard or ability of mental capacity.

At the begining of the 20th century not everyone could read and write. But the majority of the population had some sort of skills and had by the time they became adults; had developed stratagies for being able to deduce right from wrong and solve problems. And futhermore by the 1950s we had a population that may not have been all university graduates but the vast majority were highly skilled tradesmen or workers.

Today what we have is an ever growing population of screen monkeys that are ignorant to their own ignorance. The vast majority are either incapable of reading a book or lack the required attention span. For them television is easier and if they begin to question their inaptitudes intellectual, the Internet provides a quick illusionary solution. Much like an alcoholic cracking open a cold one, the problem ceases to exist in their comfortable world of escapism. And sadly like any addict, no shock treatment or intervention can pull them out of this abysmal pit of self delusion.

Trying to talk to the mass hoards of morons is futile. Our species is doomed to extinction and the dumb ass scientists can talk about merging with machines with star trekies all day long. But the fact will remain that once a machine examines any human they will classify us as just obsolete non usuable parts. (Even the most intelligent nobel prize winners amongst us will be classifed as useless junk.)

But maybe there's hope! Perhaps if stay out of their way, humans will be allowed to go back to living in caves and learning what type of moss is good for whiping our asses.

That's exactly what it's a case of. 40 or 50 years ago kids knew the Constitution like it were the "pledge of allegiance." These days, kids are not taught the constitution. Even at 23 years old I was never taught the constitution. I had to look it up on my own.

Why don't we teacher law in public schools? Perhaps it's because the government, doesn't want us to know the law!

I agree to a certain extent. I think with the internet becoming widely available, people have access to more information. A lot of presumably well read people, get information from the internet. But you're exactly right; essentially, the schools aren't properly teaching our children.

Again, I agree with you for the most part. I think so many people are entwined with their materialistic objects, that are usually used in utterly worthless ways to waste one's life. Technology can be good though. After all, here in this virtual world, is you and I, sharing ideas and expressing concerns. This makes the world a lot easier to study, learn and, grow as independent individuals.

I know that they gave a machine rat braincells, and it acted like a rat. But I would hope to God they wouldn't give it human brain cells. Plus, I'm pretty sure that type of thing would be illegal. (As cloning is usually illegal.)

    Allowed being the alluding word.

only 17%? that's got to be the best it's been in years. i used to get made fun of for reading when i was in elementary school 15-20 years ago.

definitely wouldn't work in my case. reading stoned means getting through 2 or 3 sentences, then realizing 10 minutes have passed and i'm thinking about something completely unrelated.

Do they seriously not teach the Constitution in schools anymore? That's kind of scary. I think you may be right - the government doesn't want us to know the law so that they can take away our rights and we're too stupid to even care or realize it's happening. Which they've already begun to do...

I'm in my fourties and can't ever remember learning the Constitution and I don't care. We did tho, hafta pray to the friggin flag every morning. It was called "reciting the pledge of allegiance".

And back then kids who hated school could leave at 16 and go get jobs. We didn't force them to sit there all day for 12 yrs., listening to someone else talk, taking stupid multiple choice tests and having to ask permission to go to the bathroom.

It's not just the government, local, state, national..it's us..all of us, the rich who will not give back in thanks for what they have, the poor who blame the rich cuz they never had a chance, the ignorant who blame the government, usually the Democrats for some idiotic reason, the media who fill our minds with worthless cheap "entertainment", the kids going to school, which they hate because "Somebody makes me do it", whining like a bunch of spoiled brats, "Oh, I have to ask someone to go to the bathroom"..whine, whine, whine.

Ya know, in my area we got boat loads of Vietnam refugees after the Vietnam war, this area was one of the main staging zones for entry. Most of those kids excelled in the "shitty" schools around here. Why is that? Why can't our kids learn in the same environment those Vietnamese were in? Could it be because they and their parents are spoiled, and want everything handed to them on a silver platter?

Grow up people, the world is going to eat us alive if we don't wise up. Anybody check the stats I posted, anybody read the articles? Anybody do any research on this "gonna solve everything" internet? Anybody know how to do research?

    Eavesdrop,

Thanks for the link. This guy seems to have given a very thought out rebuttal to those that give credence to the theory that awarded grades have been artificially increasing.

If I may, I'd like to address a few of his points.
The point is not how many As, Bs, or Cs are awarded each year, but the value of those grades. So if 10 As are awarded this year as opposed to 15 the year before, that does not say anything about how the decision to award those grades was reached. He seems to think all grades are awarded according to a strict Bell Curve. This is rarely the case at elementary or secondary levels of education in the U.S. When, and if, a Bell Curve is used at those levels, the teacher is usually free to determine the center of distribution and the range of the assigned grades above or below that center, such as 10% receive As. In addition grades may be curved by using the top score as the absolute grade, meaning that not 100% correct would be a perfect score but the top score achieved would be a perfect score. So if the highest score is 50% percent right, 50% becomes the highest A grade.

I have lots more, but I'm tired at the moment so maybe I'll check back later.

Well Edmund Burke was the only one to say it. The 'often' is the countless others since him, paraphrazing it without reference to make themselves sound smart

And many that are evil pretending to be good

Wouldnt the most illiterate society in history be all the homosapiens that lived before the invention of writing and printing presses?

It was a mystery for about 80 years why the flu pandemic at the end of world war 1 killed mainly young adults. Every other epidemic hits the very old or very young. Started from birds, mutated to pigs kept on the front lines and spread across the world by all the travel going on due to the war.

Anywhere up to 130 million dead, just on the flu, no one having any idea at the time it was the bacon, 15 something million dead on the war itself, a war that wasnt really about anything, no one really having an idea how to handle mechanized warfare, and didnt really end up deciding anything.

Then the Great Depression, a whole big mess really cos no one had adopted Keynesian economics

Then of course WW2. The first half of the 20th century is littered with shocking wastes of human life, all because we didnt know shit

Our species was always doomed to extincton, is the nature of evolution. Just the increase in population alone, increase in visual stimulation, social interaction, changes in diet will cause our brains to get bigger, our teeth to get smaller until we morph into a new classification......regardless of reading material
