I just watched a video on YouTube which deals with the subject of the radio and how people discover new music.

It could be new music, or older music you have never heard before. How do you discover it? The radio? Internet? Magazines? Friends?

These days I learn about new music mostly through the internet. Back when I was in high school, there was this show on cable access late at night which featured a lot of cool, relatively obscure music, which is how I discovered a few of what are still some of my favorite bands today.

So what is some of the last music you discovered, and how did you first hear about it?

I actually got into a lot of cool music from you initially like Love, Talking heads, King Crimson, and Genesis. Later I'd go into a music database like AMG and read bios on bands and albums and would find out about bands myself through that process.

The local Barnes and Noble would have all the cool obscure stuff too. I got into Zappa that way.

For me, a great tool for discovering new music is the website Rate Your Music. What's cool is that you get to read reviews from the general public vs. some of the pretentious, over-hyped crap you get with Pitchfork and such. It's also cool how the music is ranked according to year, genre, etc. One feature allows you to see the highest rated albums among all the albums released for a particular year. For instance, this is how this year looks so far.

Honestly, I am flattered to hear that. I knew that over the years of me being here I helped a lot of people discover music they had never heard before, but I didn't know you were one of them.

Also mostly through the internet. I'm mostly on Last.fm and youtube these days. Lately I don't really surf the last.fm pages but I have my scrobbler on the screen and you can see the bio of the band and stuff but also the similar artists (which I then often check out on youtube). Have discovered cool stuff through that. I don't really like listening Pandora or radio stations, I rather choose myself what I wanna hear all day :D

edit: when I hear something on youtube that I dig I generally download the album on Soulseek to check it and the whole album out better. Also really awesome to find old obscure lp rips.

Youtube... and it's usually "New to me old music". There aren't many genres that I like the more recent stuff.

yeah I do youtube, lastfm, and I always listen to bands recommended to me by friends/family.

I'm pretty open to every kind of music out there, with exception of super heavy metal, so I'm an easy person to recommend music to

i generally don't discover new music. i don't actively listen to music that often, so i just don't make it much of a priority to find new stuff. i listen to the radio at work or when i'm driving, but i generally listen to talk radio, and when i do listen to music it's not like the radio ever plays anything that it hasn't already played a thousand times anyway.

what new music i do discover comes largely from friends. i've also discovered a fair amount of decent stuff from video game soundtracks.

    Mostly from my friends' recommendations.

I used to discover a lot of music through pandora, but now they play pretty much the same ol' stuff.

I've discovered some of my favorite bands on my local npr station but I don't really listen to it anymore.

British music mags (Q, Mojo, Uncut, Wire) Music blogs, record stores, friends, musician friends, You-tube. I know a lot of folks have no record store in their area and that sucks. I go to a local shop called Stinkweeds, and every time I go in I am turned on to something new.
I know it is an elitist music snob/hipster website, but I fucking love Pitchfork. Pitchfork turns me on to a LOT of stuff I would have never been exposed to.

Usually youtube, and a site that I download music from which I also contribute to every so often.

Before I had the internet, it was from reading music magazines, and making a calculated guess on whether I'd like the band or not just from their music being described. Very occasionally I wasted money and bought dud albums due to that, but luckily I loved most of the bands I discovered that way. lol
