When becoming skillful enough to figure out melodies by ear on piano(without having to stop and think about what the intervals sound like); Is this one of those things that happens all at once or gradually??? When you can eventually do it, that's great but I am only really confident with 2 keys. So what if you change key. Aren't you then completely lost again and have to become familiar when another 11 keys?? At least with guitar every key is the same 'shape' For those of you who mastered the art; how did you start to learn?? I started by listening to intervals in short slow piano solos and comparing them to the examples of intervals I knew in songs(star wars=perfect 5th, ect). If I know the major scale equivalent its in, that's also a help for trial and error, but the bottom line is that I can't naturally do this without thinking and I'm not making progress. I know you may say I'm making it sound difficult but any advice would be appreciated!
Cant really help you with this to much, but I always thought the scales on keyboard were movable just like guitar shapes, you always have to skip the same amount of keys to play that certain scale in any key. I could be terribly wrong though... and that may not have been your question..
Yes they are but if you're moving a minor 2nd in the key of C, from lets say E to F, you're going from a white key to a white key. But in other keys when u move a minor 2nd, it involves going from a white key to black key, which would be a smaller 'physical' distance. Therefore everything is different.. all the physical distances are different when the key is changed!
I'm not a master at the piano, but I do know the keys pretty well. Once I learned the keys (I got a book with songs in it that had the actual letters-I can't read music) I realized I had an ear and began making my own random little melodies. Practicing will definitely make the world of difference. It took me quite a while to get as far as I did. But, I naturally have an ear for melody and harmony, so I dunno if that makes a difference.
If you memorize the melody, you should be able to transpose it to anywhere you want. I can't say I'm a great pianist, but I'm studying music in college and when I know a song, I can play it in any key, except for the fact that my technical facilities are pretty weak. Intervallic relationships don't change from key to key, so if you know all the notes, you can move it anywhere you want. It's just that you have to learn how to get your hands around the keys, which can take a while. Also sorry if this reply makes no sense, I'm a bit stoned right now.
