Writing on US currency is legal as long as it's "clean" and doesn't render the bill unusable. COOL! I've seen a lot of members with 50-state "bingo". Lol. I went through a short period of wring on currency as well. Or just drawing a smiley face with a marker. Actually, it's not limited to the US! They have users in other countries and they keep track of them just like the states. Yes, it would! Sometimes it takes a while. I got lucky. I'll PM you my user name - I have public profile on there. Most presidents have "got around", lol There's money in it for those who make and sell the custom stamps. The site is free but you CAN upgrade for more features but it's $7 or $8 a month. Not something I'm wasting my money on. If it was a one-time fee like when I joined HF and became a life-time supporter, I'd pay, but I'm not spending money on something like this. The dude who started the site is probably paying quite a bit out-of-pocket and I don't want to be rude, but that's not my problem! When I first found the site I don't think it there were any subscription options or ways of supporting it.
I got one once (Canuckistanian version) and logged it but never really went back. I found watching and moving Travel Bugs in geocaching much more satisfying of a game.
geocaching is a great hobby - it's quite popular where i live - at least it was - the coins they used to give out in my region of PA are coming to an end - no funding for them (if you find a minimum number of caches in each county you'd get a coin for those counties and they had some type of holder to mount them all in). when the coins they have are gone, they don't have plans to order more (last i heard) but even without the coins - just finding the caches, is satisfying enough physically i was unable to get out of the house much this year so i had to resort to indoor activities i think where's george would be a good classroom activity. one class could create an account and if they were lucky and had hits, it might interest them in geography! i'm considering approaching our school district about it. they have parent volunteers (i'm not a parent) for things and i'd gladly be in charge of a program like that if they'd want to do it. the kids could bring in the bills, mark and enter them and then take them back home. or i'd even bring in bills for them (and of course then *I* would take them along home, lol). anyone with kids think that would be educational/fun at all? i have no idea what grade level it would be for. dumb idea? love to hear from others before i'd approach the school... one thing i don't get about where's george is using other denominations to play. you can use ANY bill (up to $100 i believe - not sure without looking at the site) - doesn't have to be a dollar bill. i really think that's dumb to mark anything other than a george. after all, the game is where's GEORGE? not where's hamilton! or franklin!
i've gotten lots of those dollars, plus i used to be a cashier so i saw them all the time. never reported any of them though.
my friend was at the citgo the other day.. got 2 brand new 1dollar bills consecutive order from 1957.. where the fuck have they been?.
they were probably from a robbery! the thief hid the money and now is out of prison and is spending what he stole!!! seriously, it makes sense! doesn't it? and being consecutive - it was most likely a BANK robbery! don't ya think?
it doesn't have to be a joke - start a site and sell your own stamps! (if it's legal to mark the queen's currency, that is...) i don't know why the WG site doesn't sell their own stamps. there must be a reason (like some legal issue or conflict) or else the site owner is just "not so bright", lol. i thought they did sell stamps back when i first found the site in 99 or 2000, but i'm not positive.
Ok, I'll go with it... The function of the Currency and Bank Notes Act is to prevent people modifying the face value of a banknote, not to prevent them writing "good luck" etc on them. You might have realised my initial comment was about the fact certain things are seemingly only done in America. Generally this type of thing is not done in a sedate country such as the UK. We have better things to do with our time. However, I can see how this could be monertarised. "Master of the Posts" (and ongoing legislation) prevents the sale of unofficial stamps that can be processed through Royal Mail. It is very difficult to earn money doing this. It might be impossible. Perhaps only through the 419 scam.
i have a 1954 $20 bill that came out of a bank machine a decade ago..i thought it was some kind of contest but apparently it was just in the system because it was still in good usable condition i kept it I used to like drawing mustaches on the queen..now our paper 100 and 50 bills are made with plastic..i havent tried drawing on those yet
I hope the 1st sentence I quoted was sarcasm. I started playing WG this year after being given a bunch of bills as change that were all marked by the same WG member and because I am injured and haven't been able to do the outside activities I usually do. Entering a bill literally takes seconds - I've entered over 250 bills but I probably spent more time writing my WG profile than it took to enter all those bills! Plus, it's another way to meet interesting people online. If it wasn't sarcasm, I really don't appreciate the insult towards me and US citizens in general. And honestly, how is spending time playing WG any different than any other online activity? REALLY! As for the 419 scam - I don't see how that would have anything to do with WG... I am not writing this with any intent of starting an argument with you - just so you know that... "We" also spend our time doing productive and fun activities here in the US. Especially where I live. I normally spend more time outdoors year-round than indoors (when I'm not writing). Yes, I'm getting defensive now so I'll step off my soapbox before my mood changes from calm.
Poppy Sunshine, I wasn't really being that serious. I do appreciate it is a fun thing to do, and I would not wish to insult anybody that did it. I'm quite sure many Americans spend their time doing outdoor activities, and don't spend their whole lives either typing in bank note numbers or scoffing Big mac and fries. I know many Americans. I'm friends with them. It was only an off-hand comment that I wasn't really wishing to defend.`
On Sunday I gave my dad $3 as a joke and told my mom about WG and showed her my account on the site. (Giving him the $3 had nothing to do with WG.) I thought it might be a fun hobby for her and she did say that she thought she would enjoy it but wouldn't start right now - too much going on. She told me that Monday she started an account (never expected that - she's still learning how to use her computer and the internet) and entered 1 of the bills. (Still not sure why she didn't enter all 3...) So now I'm my mom's parent. When you start an account, the person who first entered the first bill you enter becomes your WG "Parent". You can only have 1 parent but obviously you can have many "children". She's my first child. I think it's funny that my mom is my child and I am her parent. Quite ironic, don't ya think? Her birthday is in a few weeks and she is very hard to buy for, but she solved my problem - I'm going to order her some WG stamps so when she decides to start playing regularly, she'll be all set! :2thumbsup:
